This mountain town, perched at an altitude of 1,050 meters on Mount Gulluk in a national park, was never conquered -its defensive position proved too formidable even for Alexander the Great. The climb is challenging (wear good shoes and bring water), but the reward is worth every step: a theater built into the mountainside, with views across valleys to distant peaks, creates one of the most dramatic settings of the ancient world; a necropolis with hundreds of sarcophagi scattered across the hillside evokes genuine wonder and offers insight into the people who once lived here.
