Barskoon Waterfall

Barskoon Waterfall in the Issyk-Kul Region of Kyrgyzstan

Barskoon Waterfall is located in the Barskoon Gorge on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul, near the village of Barskoon. This name usually refers not to a single waterfall, but to several cascades on the Barskoon River located in different parts of the gorge. That is why a trip here is most often associated not only with one point, but with a walk through the mountain valley and a visit to several natural sites.

Among the best-known waterfalls in the gorge are "Tears of the Snow Leopard," "Manas's Bowl," "Champagne Splashes," and "The Elder's Beard." These names have become established thanks to local legends and the distinctive appearance of the streams. Depending on the season and water level, the cascades look different: in spring and early summer the flow is usually more powerful, while during the dry period it becomes calmer.

The Barskoon Gorge is interesting not only for its waterfalls. Here you can find areas of Tien Shan spruce, mountain slopes with shrubs, and river terraces. At the entrance to the gorge, visitors are also shown the ruins of an old structure associated with ancient routes toward China, and among the notable sites there is a monument to Yuri Gagarin, reminding visitors of his visits to this area.

For tourists, this is one of the convenient destinations on the southern coast of Issyk-Kul, where people come for short hikes, mountain trips, and waterfall viewing. The location suits those who want to see a mountain landscape without a long expedition: some of the routes are accessible for a short walk, while more remote points require more time and preparation.

Barskoon Waterfall and the Routes of Barskoon Gorge

Here you can see cascades, mountain trails, and changing natural zones.

Barskoon Waterfall

Mountain gorge with several waterfalls on routes of varying length

The main feature of Barskoon is the opportunity to choose a route according to your ability. Some cascades can be reached relatively quickly, while others require a longer ascent along a trail or dirt road. Along the way, there are views of the river, rocky slopes, coniferous areas, and alpine meadows, and the waterfalls themselves differ in the shape of their channels, the height of the water drop, and the nature of the flow.

Visitors usually come here for hiking, photography, and short mountain outings. After rain and during the active snowmelt period, the trails can be slippery, so it is more convenient to wear shoes with good traction for the walk. In cool weather, it is noticeably colder by the water than on the lakeshore, especially in the upper part of the gorge.

In addition to the waterfalls, visitors to the gorge also note the monument to Yuri Gagarin and the changing natural zones as they ascend. Nearby are also the southern shore of Issyk-Kul and other gorges, which are often visited as part of one trip through this part of the region.

People usually get here by road from the southern shore of Issyk-Kul through the village of Barskoon, after which the route continues up the gorge by car or on foot, depending on the chosen point. Before the trip, it is useful to check the condition of the road and the weather, as conditions in the mountains change quickly.
