Cholpon-Ata Petroglyphs
Cholpon-Ata Petroglyphs in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan
The Cholpon-Ata Petroglyphs are located on the outskirts of Cholpon-Ata, near the northern shore of Issyk-Kul. This is an open-air archaeological complex where boulders with ancient images are scattered across a large area. The site is known as one of the largest and most accessible collections of rock art in Kyrgyzstan.
On the surface of the stones, you can see figures of animals, hunting scenes, chariots, as well as individual signs and compositions. The most common images are mountain goats, deer, horses, and other animals. Most of the drawings date from the Late Bronze Age to the early Middle Ages, although some images may have appeared at different times.
The complex is interesting not only for the petroglyphs themselves, but also for its archaeological context. Among the stones, there are stone layouts and structures that attract the attention of researchers. The exact purpose of this place remains a subject of study: it is considered both a monument of ancient art and a possible sacred space.
For tourists, this is an opportunity to see ancient images in a natural setting, without museum display cases, and to better imagine how life in the Issyk-Kul basin changed over many centuries. The Cholpon-Ata Petroglyphs are suitable for a leisurely walk and for discovering one of the most famous archaeological attractions in the vicinity of the city.

The territory of the complex is an open rocky space with walking routes laid out across it. The visit usually takes place on foot: visitors move from one boulder to another and examine the images carved into the dark surface of the stones. The drawings are best visible in side lighting, which is why many people come in the morning or closer to the evening.
During the walk, you can see both individual animal figures and more complex scenes. Some stones are positioned naturally, while others lie among scattered rocks, so comfortable footwear is needed for the visit. The site is especially interesting for those interested in archaeology, ancient art, and the history of the nomadic cultures of Central Asia.
Cholpon-Ata is located near the complex, where you can complement your trip with a visit to the Rukh Ordo cultural center, museums, and a walk to the shore of Issyk-Kul. The archaeological site itself is located not far from the city, and it is usually reached by taxi or car in just a few minutes from the center of Cholpon-Ata.
Before visiting, it is worth keeping in mind that this is an open site without shade along most of the route. In sunny weather, it is useful to bring water, a hat, and to check opening hours in advance if you plan to visit through the organized entrance.
