Grigoriev Gorge

Grigoriev Gorge in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan

Grigoriev Gorge is located on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul, not far from Cholpon-Ata, and extends deep into the Kungey Ala-Too range. In Kyrgyz toponymy, it is known as Chon Ak-Suu. It is one of the most visited gorges in the area around the lake’s resort zone: the road here is relatively convenient, so the trip is often combined with relaxation on the coast.

The Chon Ak-Suu River flows through the gorge, drawing its water from mountain slopes and glacial areas in the upper reaches. As you climb higher, the relief and vegetation change: below there are wide meadow expanses and shrub-covered areas, higher up there are Tian Shan spruce forests, pastures, and harsher high-mountain landscapes. Thanks to this, the gorge offers a clear impression of the nature of the northern Tian Shan even during a short trip.

People come here for walks through the valley, nature outings, horseback routes, and hikes of varying lengths. In the summer season, on the jailoo, you can see the pastoral way of life, yurts, and get acquainted with the everyday life of the nomadic tradition that is preserved in the mountain regions of Kyrgyzstan. For many tourists, this is an opportunity to briefly exchange the lakeside scenery of Issyk-Kul for a mountain setting without a long journey.

Interest in Grigoriev Gorge is primarily connected with its accessibility and the variety of natural zones. It suits those who want to see a river, conifer-covered slopes, open pastures, and the higher sections of Kungey Ala-Too within a single trip. In the warm season, people most often come here for the day, while longer routes into the upper part of the gorge require good weather and basic preparation.

Here, the valley, conifer-covered slopes, and mountain pastures come together.

The route through the gorge usually begins in a wide valley, where the road follows the Chon Ak-Suu River. In the lower part, people usually stop for short walks, photography, and отдых by the water. Farther on, steeper ascents, conifer-covered slopes, and sections of summer pastures appear, where in season you can see yurts and herds of horses.

Grigoriev Gorge is suitable for different forms of recreation. People take walks through the valley, go horseback riding, and enjoy nature outings for a few hours. More experienced travelers climb higher, toward alpine lakes and mountain pass areas, but such routes are best planned in summer and with regard to road conditions, weather, and altitude.

It is worth keeping in mind that the weather in the mountains changes faster than on the shore of Issyk-Kul: even on a warm day, it can be cool in the upper part, and after rain some sections become more difficult to pass. For a short trip, comfortable footwear, a supply of water, and a warm layer of clothing are usually enough. If you plan to go far up the valley, it is better to check road conditions in advance.

Nearby is the neighboring Semenov Gorge, which is also often included in a one-day route along the lake’s northern shore. Grigoriev Gorge is usually reached by car or on an excursion from Cholpon-Ata and other resort villages of Issyk-Kul.
