Jeti-Oguz Rocks
Jeti-Oguz Rocks in Jeti-Oguz, Kyrgyzstan
The Jeti-Oguz Rocks are located in the Jeti-Oguz Gorge, about 25 km southwest of Karakol, on the southern side of Lake Issyk-Kul. This part of the Tian Shan is known for its red sandstone outcrops, which stretch along the Jeti-Oguz River valley and are clearly visible even on the approach to the gorge.
The name Jeti-Oguz is usually translated as "seven bulls." It is connected with the distinctive shape of the ridge: several large red rocks do indeed resemble lying animals. The "Broken Heart" rock stands out separately as one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in the area. Thanks to the unusual color of the rock and its contrast with the coniferous forests, this place is easy to distinguish from other gorges in the region.
For tourists, this is one of the most accessible natural sites near Karakol and the southern shore of Issyk-Kul. People come here for a short stop at the viewpoints, walks through the gorge, and trips farther toward mountain pastures and forested areas. Nearby is the Jeti-Oguz resort with mineral springs, so a visit to the rocks is often combined with relaxation in the valley.
The rocks are interesting in different seasons: in summer and autumn, the shades of the sandstone and the relief of the slopes are clearly visible, while in the cold season, ice formations may appear in shaded places. This is not an isolated monument, but part of a large mountain landscape that helps visitors better understand the nature of the Issyk-Kul region.

Red sandstone ridges and viewpoints in the gorge
On site, visitors usually see not just one отдельную rock, but a whole chain of red cliffs and slopes stretching along the road and the river valley. The relief is best seen in dry weather and in side light, when the sandstone layers, cracks, and rounded shapes of the outcrops become noticeable. Roads and trails run at the foot of the rocks, making it convenient to view the ridge from different angles.
The main format of a visit is a short walk with stops for sightseeing and photos, but from here you can continue farther into the gorge. In the surrounding area, there are routes for hiking and horseback riding, and higher up the valley there are views of spruce forests, mountain meadows, and higher ridges. The Jeti-Oguz River makes the landscape more varied, especially in the warm season, when the water stands out more clearly against the red rock and greenery.
Nearby, you can see the "Broken Heart" rock and also stop by the Jeti-Oguz resort, known for its mineral and thermal springs. People usually get here from Karakol by road toward the Jeti-Oguz Gorge; the drive takes less than an hour, depending on road conditions and the season.
When visiting, it is worth keeping the mountain climate in mind: even in summer, the weather can change quickly, and in winter and early spring, ice and mud are common on the road and trails. For a short visit, ordinary comfortable shoes are enough, but for walks farther into the gorge, it is better to choose sturdier footwear and check route conditions in advance.
