Skazka Canyon is located on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul, near the village of Tosor. From the road, it looks rather restrained, but inside it reveals a complex terrain with areas of red, yellowish, and ochre rock. It is one of the notable natural sites on the southern coast, visited for walks among unusual rock formations and scenic views.
The canyon got its name from the outlines of its terrain: under the influence of wind, water, and temperature changes, ridges, ledges, narrow passages, and separate massifs have formed here, resembling walls, towers, or animal figures. The landscape is based on sedimentary rocks, which are easily eroded and therefore constantly change their appearance. It is this natural erosion that makes the area especially expressive.
Visitors find the canyon interesting as a place for walking and photography. Here you can climb to elevated areas, explore winding ravines, and see how the color of the slopes changes depending on the light. The routes inside the canyon are not difficult, but they require attention because of the loose ground and uneven surface.
It is better to plan a trip in dry weather: after rain, the clay soil becomes slippery and sticky. In hot weather, there is almost no shade in the open areas, so it is worth bringing water, a hat, and comfortable shoes. For many travelers, Skazka is a convenient stop during a trip along the southern shore of Issyk-Kul.

Many visitors climb to the highest points to see both the canyon and the shore of Issyk-Kul at the same time.
The place is suitable for a calm walk without special equipment, but the surface here is loose in places, with crumbling edges and steep descents. Morning or evening hours are usually chosen for visiting, when the light better emphasizes the shades of the rocks and it is easier to walk across the open terrain. In windy weather, the trails can be dusty, so it is useful to have closed shoes and sun protection.
A road runs near the canyon along the southern shore, so a trip here is often combined with a visit to the shore of Issyk-Kul, the village of Tosor, and other natural sites in this part of the coast. It is usually possible to get here by car along the highway on the southern shore of the lake, with a short turnoff to the entrance of the canyon.
It is important to remember that the landforms change over time, and ledges or outlines familiar from photographs may look different. That is why a walk through the canyon is interesting not only as a visit to a well-known site, but also as an observation of a living, constantly changing landscape.
