Suusamyr Valley

Suusamyr Valley on the road from Bishkek via Too-Ashuu

Suusamyr Valley is a high-mountain intermontane plain in Kyrgyzstan, located south of Bishkek beyond the Too-Ashuu Pass, on the Bishkek–Osh highway. It is usually considered not as part of a city, but as a separate natural destination reached via one of the country's main roads. The valley lies at an elevation of about 2,000–2,500 meters above sea level, so the climate here is noticeably cooler than in the capital and the foothills.

The valley's landscape is shaped by wide open spaces, the Suusamyr River, seasonal pastures, and mountain ranges along the edges of the plain. After the winding ascent to the pass and passage through the tunnel, this area feels like a sharp change of scenery: the road emerges onto a vast plateau with distant horizon lines and many viewpoints directly along the way.

Suusamyr Valley is known above all as an area of summer jailoo pastures. In the warm season, you can see yurts, herds of horses, sheep, and cattle, offering a glimpse of Kyrgyzstan's traditional pastoral way of life. For travelers, the main interest is usually in the natural scenery, stops for photography, observing rural life, and driving along one of the country's most scenic mountain routes.

A visit to the valley is especially convenient to combine with travel between northern and southern Kyrgyzstan. At the same time, it is important to consider the altitude and changeable weather: even in summer there can be strong winds, cool evenings, and sudden changes in conditions, while in winter this section of the highway and the surrounding area are often covered with snow.

Wide high-mountain plain beyond the Too-Ashuu Pass

The main feature that sets this area apart is the combination of a vast open valley and the mountain slopes surrounding it. People usually stop here for panoramic views, to see how the relief changes after the pass, and to take in the Suusamyr River, the meadows, and the distant outlines of the ranges. In clear weather, the scale of the plain and the seasonal rhythm of pasture life are especially easy to appreciate.

In the warm season, you can observe summer encampments of herders, yurts, and grazing animals in the valley. For tourists, this is not a museum reconstruction but a living rural environment, so it is important to behave respectfully during stops and not enter yurts without an invitation. Depending on the season and road conditions, short walks in the surroundings, picnics in nature, photography, and horseback outings with local guides are possible.

The valley is primarily suited for a transit visit with stops along the road, but some travelers come here specifically for landscape photography, observing high-mountain meadows, and a quieter introduction to the nature of the Inner Tian Shan. Nearby, people often stop at viewpoint sections of the Too-Ashuu Pass and at points along the Bishkek–Osh highway, from where different views of the mountains and the valley open up.

It is usually reached by car from Bishkek via the Bishkek–Osh highway through the Too-Ashuu Pass. Before the trip, it is worth checking the weather and road conditions, especially outside the summer season.
