Upper Lake

Upper Lake in Grigoriev Gorge near Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan

Upper Lake is located in Grigoriev Gorge on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul, near Cholpon-Ata. It is the highest and largest of the three mountain lakes in the gorge, which also include Middle Lake and Lower Lake. The site is among the region’s popular natural routes, visited for hiking and exploring the high-mountain landscape.

The ascent to the lake follows the gorge and takes longer than a walk to the lower points of the route. There is no direct road to the shore, so the final part of the journey is usually done on foot. Conditions on the trail depend on the season: in the warm season the route is more accessible, while in spring and after precipitation some sections may be more difficult.

As you climb, the natural zone changes: sections of spruce forest remain lower down, while open slopes, mountain meadows, and rocky areas prevail closer to the lake. Because of the altitude, it is noticeably cooler here than on the shore of Issyk-Kul, so even in summer it is worth taking the changeable weather into account and bringing warm clothing.

Upper Lake is of interest to those who want to see a less developed part of Grigoriev Gorge and follow a route with a gradual gain in elevation. A trip here is usually combined with visits to other points in the gorge and short stops at panoramic viewpoints along the road from Cholpon-Ata.

Upper Lake

A high-mountain route to the largest lake in Grigoriev Gorge

The shores of Upper Lake are surrounded by open mountain terrain, and the main impression here is shaped not by infrastructure, but by the natural environment itself. Depending on the season, you can see patches of alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and small streams feeding the lake near the water. This place is chosen for one-day hikes, photography, and stops along the route through the gorge.

The route requires readiness for walking on a mountain trail: the elevation gain is noticeable, and the weather in the upper part of the gorge can change quickly. Comfortable trekking shoes, a supply of water, and protection from the sun and wind are usually suitable for the visit. Swimming in the high-mountain lake is usually difficult because of the low water temperature even in summer.

During the ascent, visitors pass through different natural zones, so the trip is also interesting as an observation of the changing landscape. Middle Lake and Lower Lake are located lower in the gorge, and the route itself is often combined with stops in the spruce areas and at viewpoints overlooking the valley.

You usually reach the start of the route by car from Cholpon-Ata along the road into Grigoriev Gorge, and then continue on foot. Before setting out, it is worth checking the condition of the trail and the weather, especially at the beginning and end of the warm season.
