Tourism and travel in Osh Region
Osh Region
Osh Region is located in southern Kyrgyzstan, at the junction of the Fergana Valley and the Alai Mountains. The region encompasses diverse landscapes: fertile valleys, steep mountain ranges and high-altitude pastures that shape the area's characteristic natural scenery.
The largest settlements in the region include the historic city of Uzgen and district centers, while nearby Osh city is an important cultural hub of the south. The region is known for its ancient monuments, bustling bazaars and traditional architecture reflecting the crossroads of the Great Silk Road trade routes.
The Alai Valley and surrounding ridges attract lovers of mountain sports and hiking, while the valleys offer gentle routes for family trips and relaxation. Numerous jailoo (summer pastures) and traditional villages provide an opportunity to learn about local customs and crafts.
The climate in the region is continental: hot, dry summers in the valleys and cold, snowy winters in the mountains; the best times to visit are spring and autumn (April–June, September–October).
Tourism in Osh Region is varied: cultural — visiting historical monuments and museums; nature — for mountain scenery and trekking; active — for climbing and trans-Alai routes; and family and wellness tourism for peaceful mountain retreats.
Administratively the region includes several districts and valleys, each offering its own unique routes, from market life and crafts to high mountain passes for experienced travelers.

Osh Region and Sulaiman-Too mountain as the symbol of the region
The main cultural jewel of the region is the sacred Sulaiman-Too mountain within the city of Osh, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ancient petroglyphs, sanctuaries and historic monasteries have been preserved on the mountain slopes, and nearby there is a museum that tells the story of the region's millennia-old culture.
The historic city of Uzgen is known for its complex of minarets and mausoleums from the 11th–13th centuries, which attract medieval researchers and architecture enthusiasts. The Alai Valley offers broad opportunities for trekking, horseback rides and observing high-mountain flora and fauna; here sharp peaks and deep gorges combine beautifully.
The region hosts traditional celebrations and seasonal fairs where visitors can discover local music, crafts and artisans. Local markets, especially in Osh, are famous for a variety of fruits, spices and signature dishes of Eastern cuisine.
Culinary traditions of Osh Region center around pilaf (locally called "osh" — a special recipe), grilled meat dishes from the mangal, samsa and hearty soups. Hospitality is expressed in family meals, tea gatherings and street stalls where traditions are preserved in recipes and presentation.
The region is accessible to travelers: nearby is an international airport in Osh with flights from Bishkek and neighboring countries, and a network of roads connects the region with the Fergana Valley and passes leading to high-mountain areas.
