Erzurum: resorts, hotels and tours
Erzurum
Erzurum is a major city in eastern Turkey and the administrative centre of the province of the same name in the Eastern Anatolia region. It sits on a high plateau at about 1,900 metres above sea level and serves as an important crossroads between central Anatolia, Kars, Erzincan and the route toward Van. Its position has long made the city a meeting point for trade and military routes.
The history of Erzurum is linked to Byzantine, Seljuk, Ottoman and early republican periods. The city preserves fortress sections, madrasas, mosques and mausoleums that illustrate the development of Eastern Anatolian architecture. Erzurum also plays a notable role in the history of the Turkish Republic: the Erzurum Congress of 1919, held here, was important for the national liberation movement.
For visitors Erzurum offers several attractions. It is a destination for cultural sightseeing—Seljuk monuments and museums—as well as for winter sports on the slopes of Palandoken, and for short family trips combining urban sightseeing with excursions into nature. In summer people come for walks in the mountain surroundings and for the cooler climate compared with many other parts of the country.
Areas that most interest travellers include the historic centre with its medieval monuments, Atatürk Square and nearby quarters with shops and urban amenities, the university district with more modern development, and the Palandoken area south of the centre, associated with the ski resort and winter sports facilities.
Palandoken is the main reason for winter visits to Erzurum. The ski area is close to the city, making it easy to combine skiing with visits to sights, museums and historic buildings. The resort caters to skiers and snowboarders, and the city’s infrastructure supports the seasonal influx of visitors, with transport links, hotels and sports facilities.
Erzurum is accessible by road, rail and via Erzurum Airport, which receives domestic flights from major Turkish cities. This makes the city a convenient base for trips through Eastern Anatolia without complicated transfers in smaller settlements.
The climate in Erzurum is sharply continental: winters are long and snowy, while summers are short and moderately warm. For skiing, the best time is the period with a stable snow cover in winter; for walks and sightseeing, late spring, summer and early autumn are most comfortable.

Erzurum blends ski recreation with Eastern Anatolian heritage.
Erzurum and Palandoken
The main monuments of Erzurum are concentrated in the city centre. One of the symbols is the Cifte Minareli Madrasa with its distinctive façade and twin minarets, dating from the Seljuk period. Nearby in importance are the Yakutiye Madrasa, built in the 14th century and now used as a museum, and the Ulu Mosque, the city’s principal historic mosque. These sites are easy to visit on a single walk through the old centre.
An important historic site is Erzurum Fortress, located on a rise and reflecting the city’s early defensive role. From there you can get a sense of the old city layout and its military significance. To learn more about the region, visit the Erzurum Congress Museum and the Archaeological Museum, which present materials on the history of Eastern Anatolia and events of the early 20th century.
Palandoken complements the cultural programme with active recreation. The mountain massif south of the city is known for ski and snowboard runs, and its proximity to the centre makes a trip to the slopes feasible without long transfers. In winter people ski, enjoy snow walks and use the sports facilities, while in the warm season the surroundings suit sightseeing drives and easy mountain excursions.
Within the city, traditional covered bazaars and the neighbourhoods around the main streets offer a view of everyday life in Erzurum outside a purely tourist environment. Local cuisine often highlights cag kebab as well as dishes typical of Eastern Anatolian cooking, including hearty meat soups and baked goods.
If your main interest is monuments and museums, it’s most convenient to visit from late spring to early autumn; for skiing on Palandoken, plan for the winter months when the resort operates at full capacity.
