Akdamar Island

Akdamar Island in Van, Turkey

Akdamar Island is located on Lake Van off the coast of the Gevas District, southwest of the city of Van. It is one of the most famous islands on the lake and the second largest. Its name is often associated with an Armenian legend about Princess Tamar and a young man who swam across the lake at night, guided by a light on the island.

The main monument of Akdamar is the Armenian Church of the Holy Cross, built in the 10th century during the time of the Armenian Kingdom of Vaspurakan. The small church is especially famous for its exterior stone carvings: biblical scenes, figures of saints, images of animals, and decorative floral ornaments can be seen on its facades. Thanks to this decoration, the church is considered one of the notable monuments of medieval Armenian architecture in the region.

The island itself is small: it measures approximately 0.7 km in length and 0.6 km in width, and its shoreline stretches for about 2 km. Akdamar is interesting not only for its history, but also for its location in the middle of the high-altitude Lake Van. People come here to see the church, walk around the island on foot, and enjoy panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountainous shores.

A medieval church with carved facades on Lake Van

On Akdamar, visitors usually explore the Church of the Holy Cross both outside and inside, paying attention to the reliefs and proportions of the building. The facades are especially interesting, with scenes from the Old and New Testaments carved in stone, as well as decorative motifs characteristic of 10th-century Armenian art. After restoration, the church is used as a museum, although services may be held here on certain days.

The island can be explored on foot in a relatively short time. The route around the church and along the coastal paths is suitable for a stroll and for taking in the views of Lake Van. In spring and early summer, the island changes noticeably thanks to blooming vegetation, and in clear weather the shores of the Gevas District are clearly visible from here.

Akdamar is usually visited as part of a trip around the surroundings of Lake Van; the lakeshore itself, the Gevas District, and historical monuments in the city of Van are also of interest nearby. It is usually reached by boat from the piers near Gevas, from where trips to the island are organized.
