Alacali Mosque
Alacali Mosque in Elazig, Turkey
Alacali Mosque is located in the historic district of Harput, situated on high ground northeast of the center of Elazig. It is one of the notable monuments of Harput’s medieval urban fabric, near which the fortress and other religious buildings have been preserved. The mosque is usually visited during a walk through the old part of the city.
The building is generally attributed to the Artuqid period and dated to the beginning of the 13th century. For this reason, the mosque is considered one of the oldest in the vicinity of Elazig. For travelers, it is primarily of interest as a rare example of Islamic architecture in Eastern Anatolia, connected with the early stage of Harput’s development.
The name of the mosque is translated as “motley” or “variegated.” It is associated with the alternation of light and dark stone in the masonry, especially noticeable in the minaret and certain exterior details. This feature makes the building easily recognizable and helps illustrate architectural techniques characteristic of the Artuqid period.
Inside, the mosque has a rectangular plan and restrained decoration, where the main role is played by the spatial structure rather than ornament. Some of the wooden elements belong to later Ottoman-era reconstructions. Today, people come here not only for its religious significance, but also to see one of the key monuments of historic Harput.

Black-and-white masonry and traces of Artuqid architecture
When visiting the mosque, it is worth paying attention to the exterior stone masonry with alternating dark and light courses. This detail gave the building its name and is best seen from the outside, especially in the design of the minaret. These elements make it easy to compare the mosque with other buildings of medieval Harput.
The interior space is organized simply and clearly: a rectangular hall, arched supports, and later wooden parts of the roof structure. There is not a large amount of decorative detail here, so visitors are more likely to notice the proportions, the wall material, and the overall character of the region’s old religious architecture. If the mosque is open to visitors, it is better to enter at times when prayer is not taking place and to observe the usual rules for active places of worship.
Harput Fortress and other historical landmarks of the old city are located nearby, so a visit to the mosque can easily be included in a short walking route around the area. Such a walk makes it possible to see how religious, defensive, and civil buildings coexisted within one historical center.
Harput is usually reached from the center of Elazig by car, taxi, or public transport; the journey takes little time, as the district is located about 5–6 km from the city.
