Amasra Castle

Amasra Castle in Amasra, Turkey

Amasra Castle is located in the historic part of Amasra on Turkey's Black Sea coast. It is a fortification complex that developed on the site of the ancient city of Amastris and was rebuilt over the centuries by different states. As a result, the surviving walls and towers show features of the ancient, Byzantine, and Genoese periods.

The complex covers the mainland part of the city and a section on the island side. Two main zones are usually distinguished - Zindan Kalesi and Sormagir Kalesi, connected by the stone Kemere Bridge. This layout makes the castle a prominent part of the urban landscape: it is connected not only with defense, but also with the very layout of old Amasra.

Today, visitors can see sections of the fortress walls, gates, towers, and old masonry built into the residential development of Amasra's historic center. During a walk around the castle, views open onto two bays, the port, fishing boats, and the red roofs of the old town. Interest in the site is linked not only to its age, but also to the way the historic fortifications continue to exist within the modern urban environment.

The castle is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List as part of the Genoese trade routes and fortifications of the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions. For tourists, it is one of the main places to discover Amasra: people come here to walk through the old streets, see Kemere Bridge, and better understand how this coastal town developed.

When visiting the castle, the most convenient way is to walk through Amasra's historic center, where fragments of the fortifications appear among houses, narrow streets, and viewpoints. The most noticeable elements are the sections of the outer walls, towers, and gates, as well as Kemere Bridge, which connects the mainland with the island section. It is precisely this combination of military architecture and residential development that makes the complex especially clear and engaging for a walk.

Visitors usually come here not for a separate museum or exhibition, but for the cityscape as a whole. From different points near the walls, there are views of the Great and Little Harbors, the waterfront, and the boat mooring area. The castle is best experienced at a relaxed pace, when you can walk through the old quarters, examine masonry from different periods, and reach the viewing areas by the sea.

Nearby are the Amasra waterfront, the city beach, the Amasra Museum, and the streets of the old commercial district with cafes and craft shops. If you are already in the center of Amasra, the castle is easy to reach on foot in just a few minutes, as it is located directly within the historic part of the town.

When visiting, it is worth bearing in mind that this is above all a historic urban complex, not a separate enclosed site with a single route. Part of the walls and passageways is integrated into the ordinary urban environment, so a visit is usually combined with a walk along the waterfront, the bridge, and the old quarters near the port.
