Anazarbus Citadel

Anazarbus Citadel in Kars, Turkey

Anazarbus Citadel, or Anavarza, is located in southern Turkey, in the historic region of Cilicia, near the modern village of Dilekkaya in Adana Province. Despite the location in the listing being tied to Kars, this monument is situated not in the northeast of the country but on the Cukurova Plain. The complex is known as one of the largest archaeological sites in the region and combines the ruins of the lower city with fortifications on a long rocky ridge.

The site developed during the ancient and medieval periods and retained its importance thanks to its position above the plain and the roads of Cilicia. In different eras, the city was under the control of the Romans, Byzantines, the Armenian rulers of Cilicia, and Muslim states. Today, the structure of a large fortified settlement is clearly visible here, where defense was closely linked to the terrain.

At the foot of the ridge lie the remains of the lower city: sections of walls, gates, fragments of streets, and ruins of public and residential buildings. At the top are the citadel and defensive lines stretching along the rock. The ascent makes it possible to see how the builders used natural cliffs and narrow passages to protect the fortress.

Anazarbus is of interest to those who want to see not a single building but a large historical landscape, where archaeology and natural relief are perceived as a single whole. From the height, there is a view of the surrounding plain, and the surviving walls, stonework, and individual inscriptions help convey the scale of the medieval and ancient city.

Rocky ridge with city ruins and defensive lines

On the site, visitors usually explore the lower city and then climb to the upper fortress. Below, the remains of the city layout, individual paved sections, fragments of gates, and stone blocks from large buildings are visible. Above, the defensive lines, walls, and sections of fortifications that follow the shape of the rocky crest are best preserved.

The ascent follows a stone path and steps, so comfortable footwear and a supply of water are needed for the walk, especially in warm weather. There is almost no shade in the open areas, and the surface is uneven in places. During the visit, it is worth paying attention not only to the individual ruins but also to the overall arrangement of the walls, towers, and passageways, which clearly shows the defensive logic of the complex.

From the top, you can view the plain and imagine why this place controlled the approaches to the city and the surrounding roads. Other monuments of Cilicia are located near the archaeological zone, and a trip here is sometimes combined with visits to ancient and medieval ruins in the surroundings of Adana and Ceyhan. Anavarza is usually reached by car from Adana or Ceyhan via rural roads to the village of Dilekkaya.
