Ancient City of Sebaste

Ancient City of Sebaste in Kizkalesi, Turkey

The ancient city of Sebaste is located in Kizkalesi on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, next to modern resort development and the sea. In antiquity, it was an important coastal center of Cilicia, whose development was largely shaped by a convenient harbor, maritime trade, and the fertile lands in the surrounding area.

The settlement took shape in the late Hellenistic period and reached its greatest prosperity in the Roman era and in the early centuries of Christianity. At first, the city occupied an area on an elevated cape by the sea, then the urban development expanded into neighboring territories. After the pirate threat on the Cilician coast weakened, conditions for trade and navigation became more stable, which contributed to the city’s growth.

The name of King Archelaus of Cappadocia, an ally of Augustus, is connected with the history of Sebaste. It was precisely during this period that the name Sebaste became established, linked to the Greek form of the title Augustus. In literature and on maps, the name Elaeussa-Sebaste is often found, reflecting the development of the city and its coastal part.

Today, it is an archaeological area of interest to those who want to see the traces of an ancient city right by the sea. The remains of the ancient urban fabric make it possible to imagine the scale of the settlement and better understand how the cities of the southern coast of Asia Minor were organized in the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

Ancient City of Sebaste

Ruins of the ancient harbor and city quarters by the sea

On the territory of the ancient city, you can see fragments of urban structures, sections of walls, the remains of public and residential buildings, as well as individual elements of late antique development. A visit usually takes the form of a walk through an open archaeological area, where the ruins stand alongside the modern settlement and the coastline. It is best to perceive this place not as a separate monument, but as part of a large ancient coastal center.

For visitors, the city’s connection with the sea is of particular interest: it was precisely the harbor and the coastal location that made it a notable point on the coast of Cilicia. During the walk, it is worth paying attention to the terrain, the layout of the ancient quarters, and the proximity to the water - this helps to understand why the settlement arose here and how it developed over several eras.

Nearby are the Kizkalesi Castle on an islet off the shore and the ruins of ancient Corycus, so a visit to Sebaste can conveniently be combined with seeing other historical sites in Kizkalesi. People usually come here from the center of Kizkalesi on foot or within a few minutes by car, depending on where the route through the ruins begins.
