Ancient Theatre
Ancient Theatre in Perge near Belek, Turkey
The Ancient Theatre of Perge is located near Belek, within one of the most famous ancient cities in Antalya Province. It is usually attributed to the Roman period: the present structure was built in the 2nd century AD on the site of an earlier Hellenistic theatre.
The theatre is well preserved and provides a clear idea of how large public buildings were arranged in Roman Asia Minor. The semicircular auditorium has 42 rows and is divided into lower and upper tiers. It is estimated that it could accommodate about 12,000 spectators.
Of particular interest is the stage building, which in antiquity was richly decorated with reliefs, columns, and architectural ornamentation. Some of the original elements were transferred to the Antalya Archaeological Museum, while on site visitors can see the preserved structure of the theatre and understand its original scale.
Today the theatre is part of the Perge archaeological complex and is usually visited together with the other ruins of the city. This place will be of interest to those who want to see one of the region's best-known ancient theatres and gain a better sense of the daily and cultural life of a Roman city.

The Ancient Theatre of Perge and Roman architecture of the ancient city
Here you can see the layout of a Roman theatre and the scale of Perge.
Roman auditorium and remains of a richly decorated stage
During a visit, guests can examine the rows of stone seats, the passageways between the sections, and the overall layout of the structure designed for a large audience. From the upper rows, the shape of the theatre and its connection with the rest of Perge's urban layout can be clearly seen.
The stage area usually attracts the most attention. Although the decorative design has not been fully preserved, elements of the monumental facade are still visible here, allowing visitors to judge the richness of the building's decoration in the Roman period. The theatre is especially interesting for those who want to see not isolated fragments, but the complete structure of an ancient building.
Nearby are other important sites of Perge - the stadium, Roman baths, colonnaded street, agora, and city gates, so a visit to the theatre can easily be combined with a walk through the entire archaeological complex. For a more complete impression of the reliefs and sculptural details found here, visitors can then stop by the Antalya Archaeological Museum.
You can usually get here by car or on an excursion from Belek; the journey takes relatively little time, as Perge is located on the outskirts of Antalya, not far from the main resort areas. For the visit, it is worth choosing comfortable footwear and keeping in mind that a significant part of the route runs through open ground without shade.
