Arasta Bazaar
Arasta Bazaar in Sultanahmet, Istanbul, Turkey
Arasta Bazaar is located in the Sultanahmet district, in the historic center of Istanbul, just behind the Blue Mosque. It is a short shopping street that runs along the southern side of the mosque complex and fits easily into a walk through the old city. People usually come here after visiting Sultanahmet Square and the nearby monuments.
The place is connected with the layered history of this part of the city. Nearby was the site of the Great Palace of the Byzantine emperors, and today the Great Palace Mosaic Museum operates close by, where floor mosaics from the Byzantine period found here are displayed. Because of this, the bazaar is interesting not only as a shopping street, but also as part of the historical setting of Sultanahmet.
In the 20th century, the market was seriously damaged by fire, and then remained neglected for a long time. It was later restored, and Arasta Bazaar once again became an active shopping street. Today it is a small market with shops aimed mainly at travelers walking through the center of Istanbul.
The bazaar sells carpets, ceramics, textiles, jewelry, clothing, spices, and souvenirs. Compared with the Grand Bazaar, it is less noisy and easier to navigate, so it is a convenient place for a short stop during a walk. For visitors interested in handicrafts and shopping near the main sights, Arasta Bazaar can be useful both as a market and as part of a route through Sultanahmet.

A convenient place for a short stop on your Sultanahmet route.
A small shopping street next to the Blue Mosque
Arasta Bazaar is a pedestrian passage with a row of small shops on both sides. Here, people most often browse ceramics, lamps, fabrics, scarves, jewelry, leather goods, and home items. The selection is mainly intended for visitors to the historic center, so many come here not only for shopping, but also to enjoy a calm walk between the larger attractions.
This place is convenient because it does not require a separate long trip or a large amount of time. You can walk through the bazaar in a short time, look at the shop windows, compare goods, and make a short stop during a busy walk through Sultanahmet. Unlike Istanbul’s large covered markets, the space here is intimate and easy to understand, without complicated navigation.
Its location next to monuments from different periods is of particular interest. Just a few steps away are the Blue Mosque, Sultanahmet Square, and the Great Palace Mosaic Museum, where you can see archaeological finds from the area of the former Byzantine palace complex. For this reason, a visit to the bazaar is often combined with sightseeing at the district’s main historical places.
The easiest way to get here is by taking the T1 tram to the “Sultanahmet” stop, and then walking a few minutes toward the Blue Mosque. It is worth keeping in mind that some of the shops are geared toward tourists, so before buying, it is useful to calmly compare prices and quality in several stores.
