Aspendos Agora Ruins

Aspendos Agora Ruins in Side, Turkey

The ruins of the Aspendos Agora are located within the ancient city of Aspendos, northeast of Side and the Colakli district, not far from Serik. It is part of a large archaeological complex where the Roman theater is the best preserved, but the other areas also help illustrate the layout of the ancient city. The agora was its public and commercial center, where everyday urban life took place.

Today, at the site of the agora, you can see the remains of walls, building foundations, sections of stone masonry, and fragments of paving. The surviving elements are not as striking as the theater, yet it is here that it is easier to understand the layout of the central square and the arrangement of the surrounding public spaces. Exploring this area is especially interesting for those who want to see not a single monument, but the structure of an ancient urban center.

Aspendos was one of the important cities of Pamphylia and developed significantly during the Roman period, when many of its well-known structures were built here. Later, the city continued to exist during the Byzantine period, so the archaeological area reflects several historical stages. The ruins of the agora provide a more complete picture of the city's development and complement a visit to the other sites of the complex well.

For tourists staying in Side and Colakli, this is a convenient historical trip for half a day or a few hours. The agora is usually explored together with the theater, the remains of the basilica, the stadium, and other structures of Aspendos. Such a visit is suitable for those interested in ancient architecture, archaeology, and the history of southern Turkey.

Remains of the city square next to the theater and ancient streets

When exploring the agora, it is worth paying attention not only to the individual fragments of masonry, but also to the overall composition of the space. From the arrangement of the walls and room foundations, you can imagine how the square was organized and where the trading rows and public areas were located. This place is best appreciated at a leisurely pace, when you can observe the lines of the structures and the connection of the agora with other parts of the ancient city.

The site does not look like a fully restored monument, so what matters here is the archaeological readability of the space. Tourists usually walk along the preserved stone surfaces, examine the remains of the buildings around the perimeter, and compare what they see with the plan of the ancient city. Footwear with firm soles is convenient for visiting, as the surface is uneven and stony in places.

Nearby are the famous Aspendos Theater, the remains of the basilica, the stadium, and other structures of the ancient complex, so the trip is usually combined with a tour of the entire archaeological area. The easiest way to get here is by car or as part of an excursion from Side; from the center of Side and the Colakli district, the journey usually takes less than an hour.
