The Aspendos Amphitheatre is located near Serik, east of Side, within the archaeological complex of the ancient city of Aspendos. From the center of Side, it is usually reached by car or as part of an excursion. The theatre is considered one of the best-preserved monuments of the Roman era in Turkey and often attracts those interested in ancient architecture beyond the coastal area itself.
The structure dates back to the 2nd century AD and was built during the Roman period. The theatre was constructed against a hillside, which was typical for buildings of this kind at the time. To this day, the semicircular auditorium, orchestra, stage, and high stage building have survived, making it possible to clearly imagine the layout of an ancient theatre and the scale of Roman engineering thought.
A distinctive feature of Aspendos is its high degree of preservation. The stone rows, passageways, staircases, and a significant part of the decorative and structural elements are far more legible than in many other ancient theatres in the region. This is believed to have been helped by the fact that the structure continued to be used and repaired in later periods, including during the Seljuk era.
The trip is usually combined with a visit to other ruins of ancient Aspendos, including the remains of the aqueduct, the agora, and urban buildings. The site is especially interesting for those who want to see not just a single fragment of antiquity, but an entire historical area. In the warm season, it is more convenient to arrive in the morning or closer to evening, as the stone stands and open areas heat up quickly in the sun.

Because of this, a visit offers a clearer idea of how Roman theatres were arranged and how space was distributed for audiences and performances.
On site, it is worth paying attention to the slope of the auditorium and the good acoustics for which Roman theatrical structures are known. Climbing the stone rows requires comfortable footwear, and in hot weather it is useful to bring water and a hat, as there is little shade in the stands. For a relaxed visit, it is best to allow time not only for the theatre itself, but also for a walk around the archaeological area.
Nearby, you can see the remains of the ancient city of Aspendos and the famous Roman aqueduct, which is among the most notable engineering structures of the complex. If time allows, the trip is sometimes also combined with a visit to ancient Side to compare different monuments from the Roman period on the coast and inland in the region.
