Assos Harbor
Assos Harbor in Assos (Behramkale), Turkey
Assos Harbor is located in the lower part of Behramkale, at the foot of the hill on which ancient Assos stands. It is a small seaside bay in Canakkale Province, where the close connection between the modern settlement and the ancient landscape has been preserved. From the water and the promenade, the slope of the hill with the ruins of the Temple of Athena at the top is clearly visible.
Today, the harbor is used mainly by small fishing and pleasure boats. Stone piers stretch along the shore, and restaurants, cafés, and small hotels operate in the old stone houses by the water. The historic buildings make this part of Assos recognizable and distinguish it from more modern resort promenades.
For tourists, the harbor is interesting as a place for a peaceful walk by the sea and as a convenient point from which to view the relief of the ancient city from below. It is pleasant to stop here after visiting the archaeological area, sit by the water, or watch the boats in the bay. People come here especially often toward evening, when the light is softer and the outlines of the hill and the shore are more clearly visible.
The harbor is not a major port or a separate museum site, but it helps one better understand the layout of Assos, where the upper ancient city and the lower coastal part are perceived as a single space. It is one of those places where the historic appearance of the settlement remains visible in everyday life.

Assos Harbor at the Foot of the Ancient Hill
Here by the water, the connection between the bay, the old houses, and the ruins above is clearly visible.
Stone Piers Below the Hill of Ancient Assos
Right by the water, you can see small boats moored along short piers and a dense line of stone buildings facing the bay. The shore here is narrow, so the promenade feels intimate: the main views are focused on the boats, the old masonry, the sea surface, and the ascent to the hill. This place is suitable for a leisurely walk and a short stop between exploring the ancient ruins and relaxing by the sea.
The main feature of the harbor is the striking difference in elevation between the coastal part and the upper town. From below, the layout of ancient Assos is easy to read: the harbor by the sea, the residential quarters of Behramkale above, and the archaeological area at the top. Because of this, it is easy here to imagine how the ancient city was arranged, connected to the sea and at the same time protected by the height.
In the harbor itself, people usually spend time in cafés by the water, photograph the view of the hill, watch the boats, or set off on short boat trips if they are available in season. Nearby are the ruins of the Temple of Athena, the city walls of ancient Assos, and the old streets of Behramkale with stone houses.
People usually descend to the harbor from Behramkale along the road leading from the upper part of the village to the sea; the most convenient way is to arrive by car or local transport to Assos and then walk down on foot. It is worth keeping in mind that the section between the upper village and the shore is on a slope.
