Assos Old Town
Assos Old Town in Canakkale, Turkey - acropolis and ruins
Assos Old Town is located near the village of Behramkale in the south of Canakkale Province, not far from the Aegean Sea coast. The archaeological zone occupies a high rocky hill with views over the bay and the surrounding slopes. For travelers, it is one of those places where ancient ruins and the rural landscape are perceived as a single historical space.
The settlement originated in the Archaic period and is associated with the Aeolian Greeks who came from Lesbos. The chosen location was convenient both for defense and for maritime contacts. At the top of the acropolis, the Temple of Athena was built in the 6th century BC, and its ruins remain the main landmark of the ancient city and one of the most recognizable monuments of Assos.
The history of Assos spans several eras. The city is known for the fact that Aristotle lived here in the 4th century BC. Later, Assos became part of Hellenistic states, then of the Roman Empire, and during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods the area continued to be used and retained strategic importance thanks to its position above the sea.
Today, visitors can see sections of the city walls, the acropolis, the ancient theater, the necropolis, and the remains of the temple complex. Assos is of interest to those who want not only to look at individual ruins, but also to imagine the layout of an ancient city within its natural terrain. A visit is usually combined with a walk through Behramkale and a trip down to the old harbor by the sea.

Acropolis, theater, and city walls above the Aegean coast
It is best to begin the visit from the upper part of the hill, where the acropolis was located. Here, the ruins of the Temple of Athena, fragments of columns, and stone foundations have been preserved, making it possible to understand the layout of the sanctuary. From this point, there are excellent views of the sea, the harbor of Assos, and the rural surroundings, so many people come here not only for archaeology, but also for the panoramic scenery.
Further down the slope are the ancient theater and sections of the fortification walls. The theater is built into the terrain and clearly shows how natural hillside slopes were used in ancient cities. While walking around the site, visitors also encounter the remains of residential and public buildings, the necropolis, and elements of later fortifications connected with the settlement’s long history.
After visiting the archaeological zone, you can walk through the stone streets of Behramkale, where village buildings made of local stone have been preserved, and then descend to the old harbor with its small hotels and fish restaurants. Nearby, there are also other sites of the Troad, which are often included in an itinerary through the south of Canakkale Province.
Assos is located in the Ayvacik district, approximately a few dozen kilometers south of the city of Canakkale. Visitors usually come here by car or bus via Ayvacik and Behramkale, after which part of the route around the site is more conveniently explored on foot.
