Asthma Cave
Asthma Cave in Kizkalesi, Turkey
Asthma Cave is located in Kizkalesi, on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, near Mersin. It is usually visited together with the nearby karst attractions - Heaven Cave and Hell Sinkhole. The Turkish name Astim Magarasi is linked to the local belief that the cave air is beneficial for breathing, but today it is above all a natural site of interest for its geology and accessibility for visitors.
The cave was formed in limestone rock as a result of long-term karst processes. Inside, stalactites, stalagmites, and mineral deposits have been preserved, continuing to form thanks to constant humidity and dripping water. The illuminated route helps visitors see the main sections of the cave without requiring special preparation or equipment.
The descent inside is equipped with a metal staircase with railings, leading about 20 meters down. The cave remains cool even on a hot day: the temperature usually stays around 15 °C, and the humidity remains high. Because of the dampness, the steps and floor may be slippery, so it is best to choose comfortable footwear and move carefully when visiting.
Asthma Cave is suitable for those who want to see the characteristic karst landscape of the Cilician coast and add a short trip into a natural monument to their seaside holiday. It is not a very large site, but it gives a clear impression of underground processes and fits well into an itinerary around the Kizkalesi area.

Here, the transition from the hot coast to the cool underground space is clearly felt.
Karst cave with a cool, humid microclimate
The interior space of the cave is relatively compact, so the visit usually does not take much time. Visitors walk along the equipped section, where they can observe limestone deposits, uneven walls, and areas where water continues to slowly reshape the rock. Artificial lighting makes the relief more visible, but in some places semi-darkness and the sense of an enclosed underground space naturally remain.
The main feature of the visit is the noticeable difference between the heat on the surface and the coolness inside. Because of the constant humidity, the air feels different here than outside, and the surface of the rock and metal structures may be damp. For a comfortable visit, shoes with non-slip soles and a light cover-up are useful, especially if the trip takes place in summer.
The cave is often included in a short route around Kizkalesi together with Heaven Cave, Hell Sinkhole, and the coastal fortress of Kizkalesi. It can usually be reached by car or taxi from the center of Kizkalesi in a short time.
The site is suitable for those interested in natural landforms and who want to see the geological side of the region rather than its beachside character. When visiting, it is worth taking into account the stair descent and high humidity, so the site may be less convenient for people with limited mobility.
