Boyabat Basalt Columns
Boyabat Basalt Columns

Boyabat Basalt Columns

Boyabat Basalt Columns in Sinop, Turkey

The Boyabat Basalt Columns are located in the Boyabat district of Sinop Province, in northern Turkey. This is a natural geological formation created by the solidification of lava: during the cooling process, the basalt cracked into columns with polygonal cross-sections. Such formations are relatively rare and clearly show how volcanic rocks change structure under the influence of natural processes.

The main feature of this place is the regular stone columns gathered in a dense mass. Their geometry is especially noticeable up close, when individual faces, the height of the columns, and natural cracks in the rock can be seen. For tourists, this is above all an opportunity to see a striking natural site that differs from the familiar forest and coastal landscapes of Sinop.

People usually come here for a short educational stop, a walk in the surrounding area, and photographs. The site will be of interest to those who are interested in geology, natural monuments, and routes through the inland part of the province, not only the Black Sea coast. It is better to plan the trip in advance, as the columns are located not in the center of Sinop, but away from the main urban routes.

Before visiting, it is useful to check the condition of the access road and the weather conditions, especially in the rainy or cool season. Comfortable shoes with non-slip soles are suitable for visiting, and on site it is important to observe normal caution on the rocky terrain, avoid unstable areas, and not damage the natural site.

Boyabat Basalt Columns and Exploring the Natural Formation

People come here to see the shape of volcanic rock and follow a short route.

Geometric Columns of Volcanic Rock in the Boyabat Area

At the site, visitors can observe a basalt outcrop where the columnar jointing of the rock is clearly visible - the natural division of the mass into polygonal vertical blocks. Depending on the viewing point, it is possible to see both the overall structure of the rocky area and individual elements with clearly defined faces. This is one of those natural locations where the interest lies not in the scale, but in the form itself and the origin of the relief.

The route here usually does not require a long stay: most often it is a short visit, photography, and a walk through the nearby area. It is better to choose shoes that are comfortable for walking on uneven surfaces, since the stone may be slippery after rain. If the site is not fully equipped, it is worth bringing water in advance and taking into account the lack of developed tourist infrastructure.

A trip to the columns can be combined with exploring the Boyabat area, known for its fortress and the calmer inland landscape of Sinop Province. People usually get here by car from Boyabat or from the city of Sinop, so it is best to check the route and the condition of the local roads before departure.

During the visit, it is important not to climb onto unstable sections of rock and not to leave litter behind. The place is best regarded as a natural monument for careful observation, rather than as a site for active recreation.
