Boyabat Castle
Boyabat Castle in Sinop, Turkey
Boyabat Castle is located in the town of Boyabat, inland in Sinop Province, on a high rocky hill above the Gokirmak River valley. This position made the fortress a convenient point for observing the surrounding area and controlling the routes through the interior of northern Anatolia. For travelers, it is one of the city's main historical landmarks and a prominent feature in its skyline.
It is believed that fortifications existed on this site as early as ancient times, and in later periods the castle was repeatedly rebuilt and reinforced. Parts of the fortress walls, towers, and fragments of the inner defensive area have survived to the present day. The layout of the castle is closely linked to the terrain: the walls follow the line of the rock, and some sections look like a natural extension of the hill.
The castle is interesting not only as a monument of military architecture, but also as a place from which to better understand the structure of the historic town. From the top, there are views of Boyabat, the river valley, and the surrounding heights. A visit to the fortress is usually combined with a walk through the town itself, where a quieter and more everyday side of Sinop Province has been preserved, different from its seacoast.

Fortress Walls Above the Gokirmak Valley
On the castle grounds, you can see long stretches of walls, towers, and stone defensive elements built into the steep slope. The main feature of the site is the combination of man-made fortifications and natural rock, which makes the fortress feel like part of the landscape. During a visit, it is easy to notice that the structure was created primarily for defense and observation rather than for palace life.
Visitors usually come here for the panoramic views and the opportunity to walk along the old walls. It is best to allow time for a relaxed exploration of the upper part of the hill and the city panorama, especially if you are interested in historical topography and defensive architecture. The surfaces may be uneven, so closed shoes are more convenient for the climb.
Not far from the fortress, you can walk through the streets of Boyabat and look at the traditional urban fabric, as well as combine the trip with other places in Sinop Province. The castle is usually reached through the center of Boyabat, which is most conveniently accessed by car or intercity bus from Sinop and neighboring towns.
