Bozcaada Island

Bozcaada Island, Canakkale, Turkey - port, beaches, and vineyards

Bozcaada is an island in Canakkale Province, in the northern part of the Aegean Sea, near the entrance to the Dardanelles. Its center of life is the small town of Bozcaada by the harbor, where ferries arrive from the mainland. The island attracts visitors with its combination of sea landscapes, a calm pace, historic buildings, and convenient starting points for trips to beaches and coves.

In antiquity, the island was known as Tenedos. Thanks to its position on the sea route between the Aegean Sea and the straits, it had strategic importance, and in different periods it was under the influence of Greek, Byzantine, and Ottoman traditions. This is reflected in the fortress by the port, the layout of the old town, and traces of mixed cultural heritage in the architecture and local atmosphere.

The coastline of Bozcaada is varied: there are both open beaches and small coves with clear water. Among the best-known places for swimming and relaxation are Ayazma, Aquarium, Habbele, and Sulubahce. In summer, the island is dry and warm, while the sea breeze often softens the heat, which is important to keep in mind during walks and trips along the coast.

A distinctive feature of the island is its viticulture and local wineries, which have long been part of its economic and cultural life. People come to Bozcaada not only for the sea, but also for walks through the town streets, visits to the fortress, coastal views, and a more leisurely kind of отдых compared with major resorts. It can be reached by ferry from Geyikli, and it is worth checking the current schedule before traveling.

Bozcaada Island

The harbor fortress, beaches, and vineyards on a small Aegean island

A visit to Bozcaada usually begins in the port area of the town, where the promenade, cafés, small shops, and the island’s main fortress are located. The fortress rises above the bay and remains the most prominent historic structure connected with the long military and trading history of this part of the Aegean Sea. In the old quarters, you can see traditional houses, narrow streets, and a calmer urban layout than in Turkey’s larger coastal centers.

For trips around the island, many choose the beaches and scenic viewpoints along the coast. Ayazma is known for its more developed recreation area and sandy stretch, while Aquarium Bay is more often associated with clear water and short swimming stops. People go to Habbele and Sulubahce for open sea views, wind, and the opportunity to spend time by the water without dense urban development.

In the interior of the island, vineyards shape the local rural landscape. Some wineries welcome visitors, where you can get acquainted with local varieties and the особенностями wine production in this area. For walks around the island, it is useful to take the wind and sun into account: even in warm weather, open stretches by the shore can feel cooler than the town.

If you have time, it is worth walking along the waterfront near the port and climbing to the viewpoints by the fortress, and outside the center of the island, heading to the western part of the coast for sea panoramas and sunsets. Bozcaada can be reached by ferry from Geyikli on the mainland coast of Canakkale Province.
