Bukhara State Museum-Reserve of Architecture and Art
Bukhara State Museum-Reserve of Architecture and Art in Bukhara
The Bukhara State Museum-Reserve of Architecture and Art is located in the historic center of Bukhara, including within the Ark Citadel, where its main administrative center is based. It is one of the oldest museums in the city: its history begins in 1922, and since the mid-20th century its main museum services have been associated with the Ark, the former fortress of the emirs of Bukhara.
The museum-reserve brings together several exhibitions and branches housed in monuments of old Bukhara. This format makes it possible to explore not only museum objects, but also the historic buildings themselves. For tourists, it is a convenient way to see different aspects of the city's history - from crafts and decorative art to architecture, written sources, and objects of everyday culture.
The collections contain more than 100,000 exhibits. Among them are copperware, jewelry, examples of gold embroidery, wood and ganch carving, coins, manuscripts, books, archival documents, as well as works of painting and sculpture. The collection provides an insight into the development of Bukhara as a major craft and cultural center of the region.
The Ark Citadel itself, where the museum complex is located, is also of interest. The surviving buildings mainly belong to the later periods of the fortress's history, although the site itself is much older. For visitors, the museum-reserve is important because it helps connect the sightseeing of Bukhara's monuments with authentic objects related to the city's history and the traditions of Uzbekistan.

Collections of crafts, manuscripts, and art within the walls of the Ark
The museum-reserve's exhibitions are devoted to the history of Bukhara and the artistic traditions of the region. Visitors can see objects of decorative and applied art, antique coins, archival documents, manuscripts, architectural decor, as well as works by craftsmen who worked with metal, wood, textiles, and ganch. This range of collections is especially interesting for those who want to better understand local craft schools and everyday culture of different eras.
Part of the experience is connected not only with the exhibits, but also with the space of the Ark Citadel itself. A visit to the museum is usually combined with a walk around the fortress grounds, where you can see inner courtyards, historic rooms, and panoramas of old Bukhara. This makes the visit more vivid: museum objects are perceived in the context of a real historic setting.
For an unhurried visit, it is worth allowing enough time, especially if you plan to visit several branches of the museum-reserve in different monuments across the city. Nearby are the Ark, Bukhara Registan Square, the Bolo Hauz Mosque, and other attractions of the historic center, so the visit can easily be included in a walking route through the old city.
The museum complex is usually reached on foot or by taxi from any part of central Bukhara, as the main sites are located within the historic urban area. Before visiting, it is useful to check the opening hours of the individual branches, since the museum-reserve's exhibitions are located in different buildings.
