Buyuk Saat Clock Tower
Buyuk Saat Clock Tower in Adana, Turkey
The Buyuk Saat Clock Tower is located in the historic center of Adana, among old commercial streets and dense urban development. It is one of the most prominent landmarks of the old city and one of Adana’s best-known historic buildings. The tower is usually included in a walk through the central quarters, where the atmosphere of a late Ottoman city has been preserved.
Construction of Buyuk Saat began in 1879 and was completed in 1882. Its name translates as “Great Clock.” The tower appeared during a period of active urban development in the late 19th century, when new public buildings were being erected in Adana and the city’s infrastructure was being improved.
The structure is about 32 meters high, and about 35 meters including its base, so it is often called one of the tallest historic clock towers in Turkey. It was built of stone and brick, has a square plan, and a strict, easily recognizable silhouette. The tower is traditionally associated with the names of Armenian craftsmen who took part in its construction.
For tourists, Buyuk Saat is interesting not only as a separate monument, but also as part of the historic urban environment. People come here to see one of Adana’s symbols, photograph the tower against the backdrop of old streets, and combine the visit with a walk through nearby markets, shops, and other attractions in the city center.

The tower attracts attention first of all because of its height and concise architecture. It is best viewed from street level, walking around it to see the combination of stone masonry, brick elements, and the clock tier. Because of the dense development of the old district, the tower unexpectedly rises above the rooftops, which makes it especially striking in the city panorama.
The interior of the tower usually does not play the main role for visitors, so the visit is mainly external. The main impression comes from the historic setting around it: narrow streets, trading rows, workshops, and the everyday life of Adana’s central quarters. It is a good place for a short stop during a walking route through the old city and for photographs in the context of late 19th-century urban architecture.
Nearby are the Great Mosque of Adana, the covered market, and other historic parts of the center, so a visit to the tower can easily be combined with exploring the neighboring quarters. The easiest way to get here is by taxi, city bus, or on foot from the central part of Adana if you are already in the old city area.
