The Buyuk Saat Clock Tower is located in the historic center of Adana, among old commercial streets and dense urban development. It is one of the most prominent landmarks of the old city and one of Adana’s best-known historic buildings. Construction of Buyuk Saat began in 1879 and was completed in 1882. Its name translates as “Great Clock.” The tower appeared during a period of active urban development in the late 19th century, when new public buildings were being erected in Adana and the city’s infrastructure was being improved.
The structure is about 32 meters high, and about 35 meters including its base, so it is often called one of the tallest historic clock towers in Turkey. It was built of stone and brick, has a square plan, and a strict, easily recognizable silhouette. The tower is traditionally associated with the names of Armenian craftsmen who took part in its construction.
For tourists, Buyuk Saat is interesting not only as a separate monument, but also as part of the historic urban environment.
