Cendere Bridge

Cendere Bridge in Adiyaman, Turkey

Cendere Bridge is located in Adiyaman Province, on the road between Kahta and the Mount Nemrut area. It is one of the best-preserved Roman bridges in Turkey, spanning the Cendere River in a narrow valley among rocky slopes.

The structure is dated to the beginning of the 3rd century AD and is associated with the era of Emperor Septimius Severus. The bridge was built by Roman military engineers and soldiers of the 16th Legion. Its origin is recalled by the surviving columns with dedications erected at the entrances.

The bridge’s design is simple and striking: a large single-span stone arch crossing built from massive blocks. Thanks to precise engineering, it has survived for nearly two thousand years and remains a clear example of Roman road construction and stoneworking techniques.

For tourists, the bridge is interesting not only for its history but also for its location. It is often visited on the way to the monuments of ancient Commagene, including Arsameia on the Nymphaios and the Nemrut archaeological zone, so a stop here complements a trip around the Kahta area well.

On site, visitors can observe the high stone arch, the powerful masonry of large blocks, and the surviving commemorative columns at the approaches to the bridge. The construction features are best seen from the side, from the riverbank, where the proportions of the span and the way the bridge fits into the narrow riverbed between the slopes are clearly visible.

Today, people mainly come here to see the ancient structure and make a short stop during a regional route. The bridge is especially suitable for a peaceful walk, photographs, and an introduction to Roman engineering outside a museum setting - without display cases, but within the historical landscape for which it was created.

Nearby are Arsameia on the Nymphaios, the Karakus Tumulus, and the road to Mount Nemrut, so a visit to the bridge is usually combined with other monuments of Commagene. The easiest way to get here is by car or as part of an excursion from Kahta; the bridge lies on one of the main tourist routes of Adiyaman Province.
