Charvak Reservoir

Charvak Reservoir in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Charvak Reservoir is located northeast of Tashkent, in the Bostanlyk District of the Tashkent Region, among the mountain landscapes of the Western Tien Shan. It is a large artificial body of water on the Chirchiq River, created after the construction of the Charvak Hydroelectric Power Station. For the region, it has not only energy significance but also importance for water management.

Before the reservoir was filled, archaeological research was carried out here. On the future flooded territory, sites of ancient humans, settlements, and burial mounds from different eras were discovered. Some of the monuments later ended up under water, but the survey materials have been preserved in scientific publications and archaeological reports.

Today, Charvak Reservoir is known primarily as one of the main recreational areas in the vicinity of Tashkent. People come here for beach holidays, swimming, walks by the water, and panoramic views of the mountain slopes. Along the shores there are tourist bases, recreation areas, guest complexes, and seasonal infrastructure for short trips and weekend getaways.

Visiting the reservoir is especially popular in the warm season, although conditions on the water can change quickly. The water level depends on the operation of the hydraulic system and the seasonal regime, so the appearance of the shoreline varies at different times. Before traveling, it is worth checking the weather, the condition of access roads, and the availability of specific beaches or recreation bases.

Mountain reservoir with beaches and views of the Western Tien Shan

On the shores of Charvak Reservoir, you can see a combination of a wide expanse of water and mountain slopes that come almost right up to the water. In different parts of the coast, there are equipped beach areas, zones with piers, places for walks, and sites near private and departmental recreation bases. In season, people swim here, ride boats and pedal boats, and in some sections other water activities are also available.

For a relaxing holiday, coastal areas with a gentle entry into the water and places for daytime stays are usually chosen. Those planning to spend the whole day at the reservoir should keep in mind that the level of amenities along the shores varies: in some places there are cafes, rentals, and canopies, while elsewhere the infrastructure is minimal. In open areas, it can be hot in summer, so it is useful to bring water, a hat, and sun protection.

In the vicinity of the reservoir are the villages and resort areas of Bostanlyk, as well as roads toward the mountain areas of Chimgan and Amirsoy, which are often included in one trip together with отдых by the water. On the way to Charvak, there are viewing points from which the shoreline and the surrounding ridges are clearly visible.

You can usually get here from Tashkent by car or taxi in a few hours, depending on the chosen shore and traffic conditions. When planning a trip, it is important to remember that conditions for swimming and parking can differ noticeably in different sections of the coast.
