Travel in Tashkent Region, Uzbekistan

Tashkent Region

Tashkent Region is located in northeastern Uzbekistan and surrounds the country’s capital. It borders Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and several other regions of Uzbekistan, making it an important transport and economic hub. The administrative center of the region is the city of Nurafshon, while the largest and best-known cities include Angren, Almalyk, Bekabad, Chirchik, and Gazalkent.

The region combines plains and foothills with the mountain ranges of the western Tian Shan. This is where some of the most popular natural destinations near Tashkent are located: the Chimgan Mountains, the shores of Charvak Reservoir, gorges, forested areas, and viewpoints in Bostanlyk District. This variety of landscapes makes the region ideal for short day trips and weekend breaks.

Historically, the area was linked to agricultural oases, trade routes, and craft settlements that developed near Tashkent and along river valleys. Today, the region is known not only for its industrial centers, but also for agricultural districts, orchards, vineyards, and mountain resorts. Across different parts of the region, visitors will find both urban infrastructure and a more traditional way of life, with tea houses, bazaars, and seasonal fruit farms.

For tourists, Tashkent Region is above all a destination for nature-based and active leisure. People come here for hiking routes, cable cars, winter sports, walks by the water, family stays in the mountains, and trips to resort areas. Cultural and educational visits usually focus on the region’s cities, local museums, and the history of industrial development.

The most visited part of the region is Bostanlyk District, home to Charvak Reservoir, Chimgan, and modern mountain resorts. Other districts feature industrial cities, water management facilities, and valley areas that are important for understanding the region’s economy and everyday life. Thanks to its proximity to the capital, the region is often chosen by travelers who want to enjoy mountain scenery without a long journey.

The climate varies depending on altitude: summers are hot on the plains, while the mountains are noticeably cooler, and snow falls in high-altitude areas in winter. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walks, excursions, and trips to natural attractions, while summer is best for отдых by the water and trips to the mountains.

Tashkent Region: Charvak Reservoir and the Chimgan Mountains

The most famous tourist area in the region is located in Bostanlyk District. Charvak Reservoir attracts visitors with mountain views, opportunities to relax by the water, and well-developed shoreline facilities. In the warm season, people come here for beach-style отдых, boat trips, and short escapes from Tashkent, while cafes, accommodation options, and viewing points are available nearby.

Close to the reservoir is Chimgan, one of the main mountain recreation centers in Uzbekistan. This area is known for hiking trails, lifts, winter activities, and panoramic views. The Amirsoy resort is also located here and is focused on mountain and winter leisure; it has become one of the region’s most prominent modern tourist venues. Horseback riding, drives along mountain roads, and excursions to gorges and seasonal waterfalls are also popular in the surrounding area.

Tashkent Region does not have any UNESCO World Heritage sites, but it is valued for its proximity to the natural landscapes of the western Tian Shan and the range of scenery found within a short drive from the capital. For sightseeing routes, the cities of Chirchik, Angren, Almalyk, and Bekabad are of interest, as they offer a better understanding of the region’s industrial history, the role of hydropower, and the development of satellite towns around Tashkent. Museum visits and city tours are often combined with trips into nature.

Local cuisine in tourist areas follows the wider Uzbek tradition: teahouses and roadside eateries serve plov, kebabs, laghman, samsa, fresh salads, fruit, and dishes made from seasonal produce. The region is also known for its orchards and vineyards, so in season markets and farms offer plenty of fresh grapes, apples, apricots, and other local products. Meals often include a relaxed lunch with views of the mountains or water, especially in the Charvak and Chimgan areas.

Tashkent Region is easily accessible from the capital by road, and many popular locations are within 1-3 hours of Tashkent. The main airport for the trip is Tashkent International Airport, after which travelers usually continue by car, taxi, or as part of an экскурсия.
