Church of the Holy Apostles

Church of the Holy Apostles

Church of the Holy Apostles in Kars, Turkey

The Church of the Holy Apostles is located in Kars, near the city fortress and the historic center. It is one of the most notable medieval buildings in the city, associated with the period when Kars was an important center of the Armenian Bagratid kingdom. The church is usually dated to the 10th century and is considered a rare surviving example of Armenian Christian architecture in the city.

The history of the building reflects the succession of eras and rulers in Kars. After the Ottoman conquest, it was used as a mosque; during the Russian Empire, it became an Orthodox church; later it served as a museum, and then once again became a mosque. Because of these transformations, the exterior appearance and interior space were partially altered, but the main features of the early medieval structure have been preserved.

The building is notable for its central plan and domed composition. On the outer walls, you can see relief decoration that is usually associated with depictions of the apostles. For tourists, this place is of interest not only as a religious monument, but also as a vivid example of the layered history of Kars, where Armenian, Ottoman, and Russian heritage can be read in a single building.

When visiting, it is worth paying attention to the massive volume of the building, its composition, which appears circular, and the stone masonry characteristic of the region’s medieval architecture. The exterior decoration is especially interesting: relief figures and ornamental details have survived on the facades, making the church stand out among other historic buildings in Kars.

Today the building functions as a mosque, so tourists should take its religious status into account. Visits are usually limited to a respectful look from the outside and, if access is open, a brief view of the interior without violating visitation rules. Before visiting, it is useful to check whether entry is possible and the times when prayers are not taking place inside.

The Church of the Holy Apostles can easily be included in a walk through old Kars: nearby are Kars Fortress, old quarters, and other buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The site is usually reached on foot from the center of Kars, as it is located relatively close to the city’s main streets and the fortress.
