Devil’s Table Rock

Devil’s Table Rock in Ayvalik, Turkey

Devil’s Table Rock is located on an elevation southwest of central Ayvalik, near the Sarimsakli resort area. It is a natural viewpoint known primarily for its wide views of the city, the Aegean Sea coast, and the islands of the Ayvalik archipelago. People come here for the panorama and a short stop on the way between Ayvalik and the beaches.

The name is connected with a hollow on the surface of the rock, which local residents have long compared to a footprint. This gave rise to the folk name “the devil’s footprint,” while the site itself became known as “Devil’s Table.” It is not an archaeological monument, but a natural place around which a local legend has formed.

At the top, there is an equipped viewing area from which it is convenient to observe the coast and the islands in clear weather. The place is especially known as a sunset viewing point, when the outlines of the shore and the sea islands are especially distinct. For tourists, it is one of the most accessible panoramic viewpoints in the surroundings of Ayvalik.

Devil’s Table Rock is of interest to those who want to see Ayvalik from above without a long climb and combine the trip with a seaside holiday. It is often visited together with the beaches of Sarimsakli, the coastal road, and walks through Ayvalik itself.

At the top of the hill there is a rock outcrop with a distinctive hollow, from which the place got its name. The main interest here is connected not with a long visit, but with the view of Ayvalik’s urban area, the coastline, the straits between the islands, and the open sea. On clear days, the panorama is especially well suited for photography.

The site is equipped for a short visit: next to the rock there is a viewing area, and a metal gazebo is installed at the top. People usually come up here to spend a little time at the viewpoint, look at the coast from above, and wait for the evening light. It is worth bearing in mind that at sunset there are usually more people here than during the day.

The Sarimsakli beaches are located nearby, and in Ayvalik itself you can continue your walk along the promenade and through the city’s historic quarters. The viewpoint is usually reached by car or taxi from the center of Ayvalik, as it is located on a hill outside the urban area.
