Duden River

Duden River in Antalya, Turkey

The Duden River is located within Antalya and is known primarily for its two waterfalls, which have become some of the city's most notable natural landmarks. Upper Duden is located in the Kepez district, a little away from central Antalya, while Lower Duden is found on the Lara coast, where the stream plunges from a rocky ledge directly into the Mediterranean Sea.

Duden is a karst river: it is fed by springs, and part of its water flows through underground channels. These features have made the river important not only as a natural site, but also as part of the city's water supply system. In the 20th century, the riverbed and the associated hydraulic structures were used in the development of Antalya's infrastructure.

For tourists, Duden is interesting because it makes it possible to see two very different sections of the same river. At the Upper Waterfall, you can get close to the stream and walk along paths in the park area, while at the Lower Waterfall, you can watch the water fall from the cliffs into the sea. Both places are suitable for a walk, a short stop while traveling around the city, and getting acquainted with the natural side of Antalya.

The Turkish name Karpuzkaldiran is associated with the Lower Waterfall and is usually translated as "watermelon lifter." According to local legend, watermelons were once floated downstream along the river, and over time this name became attached to the waterfall and the neighboring part of the city.

Two different waterfalls - a park deep in the city and a stream by the sea

At Upper Duden, visitors usually walk through a shady park with paths, bridges, and platforms by the water. The main feature of this place is the grottos and passages behind the curtain of water, from where you can see the stream from the side and from inside the rocky hollow. Because of the proximity to the water, the paths can be damp, so comfortable non-slip shoes are especially useful here.

Lower Duden is perceived differently: here the main attraction is not a walk along the riverbed, but the view of the high stream falling from the cliff right by the shore. The viewing platforms are located in the Lara coastal park, and from here you can clearly see how fresh water meets the sea. This waterfall is also often viewed from excursion boats traveling along the Antalya coast.

The river is interesting both as a natural phenomenon and as part of the urban environment: in one case it is hidden among greenery and rocks, in the other it opens up against the backdrop of the sea and coastal cliffs. Near the Lower Waterfall are the parks of the Lara coastline, while a visit to Upper Duden is convenient to combine with a trip around the Kepez district.

Upper and Lower Duden are usually reached by taxi, city bus, or car from central Antalya. Both locations have well-maintained areas for a short walk, rest, and stopping at the viewing platforms.
