Fortress of Trebizond (modern Trabzon)
Fortress of Trebizond (modern Trabzon) in Ortahisar, Trabzon, Turkey
The Fortress of Trebizond is located in the historic center of Trabzon, primarily in the Ortahisar district. It is a system of urban fortifications that took shape over many centuries: the earliest surviving sections date to the Roman and Byzantine periods, and later the walls were repeatedly rebuilt and reinforced during the Empire of Trebizond and under the Ottomans.
Traditionally, the fortifications are divided into the upper, middle, and lower city. This structure was connected not only with defense, but also with the organization of the city itself: the upper part served as the acropolis and administrative center, while below were residential quarters, roads, and approaches to the harbor. Natural boundaries played an important role in defense - the valleys of Zagnos and Tabakhane, between which the lines of the walls ran.
Today, visitors can see extensive fragments of fortress walls, towers, gates, and masonry from different periods. The outlines of the fortifications are especially clear in the upper and middle sections, where the terrain helps explain the logic of medieval defense. This place is of interest to those who want to better imagine how old Trabzon was organized and how the city developed within its fortifications.
A visit to the fortress is conveniently combined with a walk through the surrounding streets of the historic center and through Zagnos Park below the fortress slope. Different viewpoints offer different perspectives on the walls and the valley, so even a short walk makes it possible to see the complex not as a separate monument, but as part of the urban environment.

While walking through Ortahisar, it is most convenient to focus not on a single entrance site, but on the line of fortifications itself, built into the modern city. In different sections, differences in masonry, tower shapes, and traces of later restorations are noticeable. The best-preserved stretches are visible where the walls approach the edges of slopes and ravines.
Visitors usually explore the fortress on foot, walking along the walls, arches, and gates, and then descending to the lower sections. In the upper part, the elevated position of the acropolis is especially strongly felt, while from below it is easier to view the overall silhouette of the fortifications. For a full visit, it is worth wearing comfortable shoes: the routes pass along stairs, inclines, and uneven old streets.
At the foot of the fortress is Zagnos Vadisi Park with paths, bridges, and platforms offering good views of the walls. Nearby are the Ortahisar district, several historic mosques, and the traditional streets of Trabzon's old center, so it is easy to continue the walk without any transfers.
The fortress is usually reached on foot from the central part of Trabzon or by public transport and taxi to the Ortahisar district. It is most convenient to begin the visit from above or from Zagnos Park in order to see the fortifications from different levels.
