Halfeti Town
Halfeti Town in Sanliurfa, Turkey
Halfeti is a small town on the banks of the Euphrates in Sanliurfa Province in southeastern Turkey. It is known primarily for its combination of ancient history, river scenery, and a partially submerged old townscape, which has created the area's unusual appearance.
The history of the area goes back to ancient times. Various sources link the locality with early settlements and several historical names, while the nearby Rumkale Fortress played an important role in the district's history. Its ruins recall the Byzantine, Armenian, and Islamic periods and help explain why this stretch of the Euphrates held strategic importance for a long time.
The modern appearance of Halfeti changed significantly after the creation of the reservoir associated with the Birecik Dam. Part of the old town ended up underwater, and residents moved to higher ground. Because of this, Halfeti is often called one of the region's most unusual towns: here, a new residential area, old stone houses, and submerged fragments of the former settlement exist side by side.
For tourists, Halfeti is appealing for walks along the waterfront and boat trips on the Euphrates, during which you can see submerged parts of the old town and the surrounding cliffs. A trip here is usually chosen by those who want to see a lesser-known side of Sanliurfa Province and combine natural scenery with historical monuments.

Here, river scenery, old quarters, and traces of a submerged town come together.
Boat trips on the Euphrates and the ruins of a fortress by the water
The main reason people come to Halfeti is for boat trips on the Euphrates reservoir. From the water, the submerged parts of the old settlement, stone houses on the slopes, and a minaret rising above the water's surface are clearly visible. This route makes it easier to understand how greatly the town changed after the water level rose.
Along the shore, you can walk through old streets, see the region's traditional stone architecture, and find small viewpoints by the water. In the new part of town, there are cafes and boat departure points, where short river excursions usually begin. The visit has a calm format: people come here less for a large number of sights and more for the area itself and its unusual appearance.
Not far from Halfeti is Rumkale, a fortress on a rocky stretch by the water that is usually viewed during a river trip. The surrounding area also includes rural landscapes and villages along the banks of the Euphrates, which add to the impression of traveling through the district.
Halfeti is usually reached by road from the city of Sanliurfa or from Gaziantep, most often by car, excursion transport, or intercity bus with a transfer in nearby settlements. It is most convenient to allow at least a few hours for the visit, especially if a trip on the water is planned.
