Harsena Fortress is located on a rocky hill above the center of Amasya and is clearly visible from the Yesilirmak River valley. It is one of the city's most prominent historical structures, connected with its centuries-old defensive system. Thanks to its elevated position, the fortress controlled the approaches to the valley and played an important role in the protection of the settlement.
Fortifications existed on this site since antiquity, and in different periods they were used and rebuilt by several states that ruled the region. Fragments of walls, towers, rock-cut chambers, passageways, and water reservoirs have survived to this day. The rocky terrain here does not simply surround the fortress, but forms part of its construction.
For visitors, the fortress is of interest above all for its combination of archaeological remains and views over the city. From the upper sections, there is a panorama of historic Amasya, the river valley, bridges, and residential quarters stretched along the water. The tombs of the Pontic kings are located on the slopes below, so a visit to this part of the city is often combined into a single walk.

The route to the fortress runs along the slope above the old part of Amasya, and even on the way it is easy to notice how closely the defensive structures are connected with the rock. On the site, you can see sections of stone walls, remains of towers, chambers cut into the rock, and elements of old infrastructure, including water cisterns. These details help to imagine not only the defense, but also the everyday functioning of the fortress on the summit.
The main activity here is exploring the ruins and panoramic viewpoints. From above, it is convenient to observe the course of the Yesilirmak, the traditional riverside buildings, and the characteristic terrain of Amasya, where the historic center is squeezed between the water and the mountains. On some parts of the path, the surface may be uneven, so it is better to allow time for a calm ascent and descent.
Below on the slope are the tombs of the Pontic kings, and at the bottom, in the center of Amasya, you can continue your walk along the river and through the old quarters. The starting point of the climb is usually reached on foot from the city center if you are already in the historic part of Amasya.
