Hidirlik Hill

Hidirlik Hill in Safranbolu, Turkey

Hidirlik Hill is located to the south of the historic part of Safranbolu and is considered one of the city's best-known viewpoints. From its summit, there are clear views of neighborhoods with traditional Ottoman architecture, thanks to which Safranbolu received UNESCO World Heritage status. It is a convenient place to see the layout of the old town and its characteristic houses with tiled roofs.

Historically, the hill was connected with the religious life of the city. In the past, collective open-air prayers were held here, and two prayer platforms remain on the site, recalling this tradition. Because of this, Hidirlik is interesting not only as a viewpoint, but also as a place connected with the everyday history of Safranbolu.

On the slopes of the hill there are burials and memorial sites, including the mausoleum of Hasan Pasha, as well as the graves of Hidir Pasha and Ali Yaver Ataman. These monuments make a walk around Hidirlik more meaningful and allow visitors to better understand how the city panorama, local memory, and historic setting are intertwined in Safranbolu.

For tourists, the hill is primarily interesting as a peaceful point from which to get acquainted with the city from above. From here, visitors can observe the old streets, the dense development of the valley, and the buildings on the neighboring slopes, including the former governor's residence, which is now used as the Safranbolu Cultural Center.

Panorama of old Safranbolu and traces of urban history

At the top of the hill, visitors usually stop for the wide view over the historic center of Safranbolu. From this point, it is especially convenient to examine the city's terrain, the density of the old development, and the characteristic facades of traditional houses. In clear weather, it is easy to see how the residential quarters rise along the slopes and form the city's recognizable silhouette.

During a walk around the site, visitors can see the preserved platforms for open-air prayers and several memorial burials. These features do not occupy a large area, but they add historical meaning to the place and make the visit not only scenic but also informative. The atmosphere here is usually calmer than on the streets below, so the hill is suitable for a short stop between walks through the center of Safranbolu.

Nearby are the old quarters of Safranbolu, Ottoman-period houses, and the former governor's residence, which is now used as a cultural center. People usually come here on foot from the historic center of Safranbolu, since the hill is located not far from the main tourist streets, although the climb may be noticeable.
