Ichan Kala Walls
Ichan Kala Walls in Khiva, Uzbekistan
The Ichan Kala walls surround the old part of Khiva - the inner city, which for centuries was the city's main fortified core. It is here that Khiva's most complete historical ensemble has been preserved: palaces, madrasahs, mosques, minarets, and residential quarters enclosed within a continuous defensive belt. For tourists, the walls are interesting not only as an architectural monument, but also as an important part of the urban layout, helping to understand how medieval Khiva was organized.
The defensive belt is built of adobe and clearly reflects the region's traditional construction techniques. The walls reach a height of about 8-10 meters, their thickness is around 5-6 meters, and they stretch for approximately 6.25 kilometers around the perimeter. At short intervals there are round towers projecting beyond the line of the fortifications, and at the top, crenellated parapets and loopholes can be seen, linked to the city's defensive function.
In the past, the walls were complemented by moats, still visible in places today, especially on the southern side. The city gates also played an important role, serving as the entrances to Ichan Kala. The surviving gateways help to imagine the structure of the entire fortification system: massive passages, towers on either side, and inner vaulted spaces.
Today, the Ichan Kala walls are part of the historic center of Khiva, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. A walk along them makes it possible to see the old city as a single ensemble and better appreciate the scale of its fortifications. This is a convenient starting point for getting acquainted with Khiva, especially if you want to understand not only individual monuments, but also the structure of the city as a whole.

The defensive belt of old Khiva with towers and gates
During a walk through Ichan Kala, it is worth paying attention to the differences between the sections of the walls, the gates, and the towers: these elements best show how defense and everyday urban life were combined. From the outside, the powerful earthen mass of the walls is clearly visible, and at the gates you can observe the traditional composition of the entrances with an arched passage and flanking towers. In certain sections, the sculptural quality of the adobe surfaces is especially noticeable, changing depending on the light and the time of day.
The walls are easy to explore in sections, combining the route with visits to monuments inside Ichan Kala. This approach helps to show how the fortifications are connected to the overall layout of the old city: the gates led to the main streets, and the towers controlled the approaches from different sides. For lovers of urban history, this is one of Khiva's most illustrative sites, because the boundary between the inner city and the outer part of the old urban fabric is clearly visible here.
Many of Khiva's famous landmarks are nearby, including Kalta Minor, the Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasah, the Kunya Ark fortress, and the Juma Mosque, so a visit to the walls can easily be included in a walking route through the historic center. People usually come here on foot, since the walls run along the perimeter of Ichan Kala in the center of old Khiva and are accessible through the city gates.
