Igneada Floodplain Forests National Park

Igneada Floodplain Forests National Park in Igneada, Turkey

Igneada Floodplain Forests National Park is located near the resort town of Igneada on the Black Sea coast of European Turkey, not far from the border with Bulgaria. It is one of the few protected areas in the country where longoz forests have been preserved - floodplain forests regularly affected by groundwater and floodwaters. This natural complex is especially valuable for the Thrace region, where forest, freshwater bodies, marshy areas, and the coastal strip come together.

Within the park are Lakes Mert, Erikli, and Saka, as well as dunes, channels, and areas of wet meadows. Thanks to the proximity of the sea and constant moisture, a diverse habitat has formed here for birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and moisture-loving plants. The area is known as an important birdwatching zone, especially during seasonal migrations.

For tourists, the park is appealing for peaceful walks along natural trails, observation of wetland landscapes, and the opportunity to see a type of forest that is rare in Turkey. In some sections, wooden boardwalks have been installed to help visitors pass through wet areas without disturbing the fragile ecosystem. This is a suitable place for those who want to discover the nature of the coast beyond a beach holiday.

When visiting, it is worth taking the characteristics of the area into account: the water level in certain parts of the park changes with the seasons, so some trails may be muddy or temporarily difficult to pass. For walking, it is better to choose comfortable closed shoes and follow the established nature protection rules, especially near the lakes and bird nesting areas.

The park's main feature is the combination of flooded forest with lake and coastal environments. Here you can see how forested areas transition into marshy lowlands, channels, and sandy dunes, and then into the Black Sea coast. This landscape changes depending on the season and water level, so even a short walk through different zones gives an idea of how diverse this area is.

Visitors usually choose leisurely routes along the lakes and over boardwalks through wet sections. The park is convenient for birdwatching, photographing natural landscapes, and becoming acquainted with the local wetland flora. The calmest way to visit is a walk with stops at viewpoints and open areas by the water, where it is easier to spot birds and signs of other fauna.

Nearby are the town of Igneada itself, the Black Sea beach, and the Igneada Lighthouse, which can be included in the same day's trip. The park is usually reached via Igneada, from where it is convenient to get to the entrance areas and walking sections by car or local transport.

Before visiting, it is useful to consider the season and weather conditions: after rain, some places become wetter, and in summer the open areas can be hot. It is better to bring water, sun protection, and insect repellent, and also not to leave the marked trails so as not to damage sensitive natural areas.
