Istanbul University in Beyazit, Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul University is located in the Beyazit district, in the historic center of Istanbul, near Beyazit Square, the Grand Bazaar, and the Suleymaniye Mosque. For tourists, it is прежде всего a notable part of the old city, where academic life is combined with the architecture of the Ottoman and Republican periods.

The modern university was established in 1933 as part of the higher education reform in Turkey. At the same time, the tradition of education on this site is much older and is associated with earlier Ottoman madrasas and higher educational institutions that existed in this area.

The most famous part of the complex for visitors is the monumental main gate on Beyazit Square. It often attracts attention as one of the city's recognizable sights. Behind the gate is a large campus with inner courtyards, academic buildings, and green areas, although part of the grounds and buildings primarily serve students and faculty.

Istanbul University is of interest to those studying the history of Turkish education, urban architecture, and the everyday life of the historic center. It is convenient to visit during a walk through the Beyazit district, combining the stop with nearby mosques, bookshops, and markets of old Istanbul.

Monumental Gate and Historic Campus in Beyazit

The main landmark for visitors is the ceremonial gate facing Beyazit Square. It is one of the most recognizable parts of the university complex and is often photographed during walks through the old city. From the outside, the connection between the campus and the historic buildings of the district, as well as its role in urban life, is clearly felt.

Inside are academic buildings, courtyards, passages between the buildings, and landscaped areas typical of a large urban university. Access to the grounds depends on current entry rules, as this is an active educational institution. Even if you limit yourself to an exterior view, the site gives an idea of how the university, mosques, markets, and busy streets coexist in the center of Istanbul.

For tourists, a visit is usually combined with a walk around Beyazit Square, a look at the Beyazit Mosque, the Grand Bazaar, and the Suleymaniye Mosque, which are located nearby. There are also bookshops, cafés, and streets leading to other quarters of Istanbul's historic center close by.

The most convenient way to get there is by T1 tram to the “Beyazit - Kapalicarsi” stop or on foot from the Sultanahmet district. Before entering the grounds, it is worth keeping in mind that access to certain parts of the campus may be restricted.
