Iznik City Walls
Iznik City Walls in Iznik, Turkey
The Iznik City Walls are located in the historic part of Iznik, a small town on the shores of Lake Iznik in Bursa Province. They surround ancient Nicaea, which was an important center of Bithynia in antiquity and during the Byzantine period. For travelers, this is one of the clearest monuments for understanding the layout and scale of the old city.
The foundations of the fortifications were laid in the Roman era, and later the walls were repeatedly rebuilt and reinforced. Their appearance preserves traces of different construction periods: massive stone masonry, towers, sections with later additions, and city gates through which the main roads once passed. The best known are the Lefke Gate, as well as the Istanbul Gate, Yenisehir Gate, and Lake Gate.
The total length of the walls is about 5 kilometers, and a significant part of the line of fortifications can still be clearly traced in the urban landscape. During a walk, you can see preserved towers, fragments of defensive walls, and sections where the combination of Roman and Byzantine elements is especially evident. This place is of interest to those who want to explore the history of Iznik not only through museum exhibitions, but also directly in the urban space.
Today, the walls are perceived not as a separate monument, but as an important part of Iznik's entire historic landscape. They are easy to explore together with other attractions in the city center, gradually moving from gates and towers to old streets, religious monuments, and the lakeshore.

Preserved gates, towers, and the defensive line of ancient Nicaea
When exploring the walls, it is most convenient to start with the Lefke Gate - this is one of the most striking and best-preserved sections of the complex. Here it is easier to examine the structure of the ancient entrance to the city, the massive masonry, and the defensive elements that show how the approaches to Nicaea were protected. In other sections, you can see towers in varying states of preservation and long stretches of wall running along modern streets.
A walk along the fortifications is suitable for those who prefer to visit historic monuments at a calm pace. It is not possible everywhere to walk directly on the walls, but many fragments are clearly visible from the outside and from the adjacent roads. It is best to plan your route so that you can see several gates in sequence and compare their condition, shape, and masonry details.
Near the walls, it is convenient to visit Hagia Sophia of Iznik, the Iznik Archaeological Museum, and the Lake Iznik promenade. These places are located within the town and complement an introduction to its ancient and Byzantine past very well.
The walls are usually reached on foot from the center of Iznik, since different sections of the fortifications are distributed around the perimeter of the old city. If you are arriving from Bursa, the most convenient option is to first reach Iznik by car or intercity bus, and then continue exploring on foot.
