Kaputaş Beach

Kaputaş Beach, Antalya, Turkey

Kaputaş Beach is a small natural cove on the Mediterranean in Antalya province, located on the D400 road between Kaş and Kalkan. It is about 20 km from Kaş and roughly 7 km from Kalkan. The beach lies at the foot of steep cliffs where the Kaputaş canyon opens out to the sea and is considered one of the most photogenic spots on Turkey's coast.

The shoreline is narrow, covered with coarse sand and small pebbles. The water is very clear, with a distinctive turquoise hue. It gets deep quickly; on windy days waves and currents are possible, so swim with caution, especially with children. Because of underground springs, the water at the shoreline can be slightly cooler.

The descent to the sea is via a staircase of about 180 steps from the roadside. Parking is limited and located along the road at the top of the steps.

In high season the beach is managed by the Kaş municipality: lifeguards are on duty, showers, toilets and changing cabins are available, a cafe is open, and sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented. Entrance is free; extra services are paid. Photos of Kaputaş are often used in tourist materials about Turkey.

Kaputaş: views from the D400 road and swimming by the canyon

The best viewpoints are right from the D400 roadside: pull-out bays allow you to take photos of the turquoise cove and the narrow canyon that opens to the sea. On clear days the water color is especially rich, and the light falls so that the cliffs form a contrasting backdrop.

Swimming and snorkeling along the coastal rocks are popular at the beach - small fish are often seen near the shore. The surface is made of pebbles and coarse sand, so water shoes are useful; at midday the stones heat up noticeably. For a comfortable visit bring plenty of water and sun protection - there is little natural shade, which appears closer to evening due to the terrain.

A stop at Kaputaş fits well with a walk around Kaş's old town and its ancient theater, a visit to the coastal town of Kalkan, or a trip to the long sandy Patara Beach west of the town.

Getting there is easy: dolmuş minibuses run from Kaş and Kalkan along the D400 with drop-off at the Kaputaş Plajı steps; by car follow the D400, watching for the beach sign and parking bays along the road.
