Karain Cave

Karain Cave in Antalya, Turkey - a Paleolithic archaeological site

Karain Cave is located in the Dosemealti district, about 30 km northwest of the center of Antalya, near the village of Yagca. It lies on a limestone slope and is a large natural grotto, important primarily as an archaeological site. For tourists, this place is interesting not only because of the cave itself, but also because of the opportunity to see one of the key prehistoric sites in southern Turkey.

Karain is known as one of the most studied Paleolithic sites in Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean. The cave’s multilayered deposits have preserved traces of a very long human presence. During excavations, stone tools, bone objects, shell ornaments, animal bones, and human remains associated with different stages of prehistoric times were found here.

The cave is especially valuable because its materials help researchers study the early history of the settlement of Anatolia and changes in the way of life of ancient people. The site is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. For those who want to better understand the significance of the finds, a visit to Karain can conveniently be combined with the Antalya Archaeological Museum, where a notable part of the objects discovered during the research is displayed.

Karain Cave - entrance, archaeological layers, and practical tips

The archaeological layers reflect long-term settlement and changes in the lives of ancient people.

Karain Cave

Prehistoric layers and a wide entrance in the limestone massif

Visitors climb to the cave by stairs on the slope, from where there is a view of the surroundings of Dosemealti. Inside, you can see a spacious entrance hall and natural cavities formed in the limestone. Karain is of interest not as an equipped underground system with a long route, but as a place where the archaeological layers and the environment itself, in which Stone Age people lived, are especially important.

At the site near the cave, brief information about the research is usually displayed, and the perception of the place is built around its scientific significance. It is best to come in comfortable shoes, as the ascent goes along steps and a rocky surface. In the hot months, it is worth taking into account the open slope and bringing water, especially if you plan to explore the surroundings.

Nearby, you can also stop by the Antalya Archaeological Museum to see some of the finds from Karain in the museum exhibition. The easiest way to get here is by car or taxi from the center of Antalya toward Dosemealti and the village of Yagca.
