Karatay Madrasa

Karatay Madrasa in Konya - Seljuk madrasa and tile museum

Karatay Madrasa is located in the city of Konya in Central Anatolia, not in Antalya. It is one of the best-known buildings of the Seljuk period in Turkey, built in the 13th century as a religious educational institution. Today, the monument is of interest not only for its history, but also for its well-preserved elements of architectural decoration.

On the outside, attention is drawn to the main marble portal with deep stone carving, muqarnas, and inscriptions. In Seljuk architecture, such an entrance was an important part of the composition, and at Karatay it has been preserved with particular expressiveness. The building itself is relatively compact, but thanks to its carefully crafted details it makes a strong impression.

Inside, the space is organized around a central hall beneath a dome with a skylight opening. The interiors are known for their blue-turquoise tile cladding and mosaic faience, characteristic of 13th-century Anatolian art. These decorative elements help explain how prestigious public and religious buildings of that time were decorated.

Today, the building houses the Karatay Museum of Ceramics, where Seljuk and Ottoman tiles, ceramics, and architectural fragments are displayed. A visit will be of interest to those who want to see an authentic monument of medieval Konya and better imagine the artistic traditions of the region. When planning a trip, it is important to keep in mind that the site is located specifically in Konya, so it should be reached as a separate intercity destination from Antalya.

The main feature visitors usually notice is the portal with its fine stone carving and the complex sculptural form of the entrance niche. Even before entering the museum, you can observe the ornaments characteristic of Seljuk architecture and see how important the decorative treatment of the facade was. Inside, it is worth paying attention to the combination of architecture and museum display: the building itself is no less important than the exhibited objects.

The exhibition is dedicated primarily to ceramics and tiles. Here you can see cladding fragments, mosaic compositions, decorative tiles, and examples of ceramic decoration associated with Seljuk and later Ottoman art. The visit helps explain how color, geometric ornament, and calligraphic elements were used in the decoration of interiors in medieval Anatolia.

During the visit, it is worth looking up toward the domed space and paying attention to the skylight opening, which organizes the interior volume. Thanks to this, the structure of the former madrasa as a unified architectural space is especially easy to understand. Other important monuments of central Konya are also nearby, including Alaeddin Mosque and Alaeddin Hill.

The easiest way to get here is after arriving in Konya - by taxi, tram, or on foot from the central part of the city, depending on your route. If you are traveling from Antalya, you first need to reach Konya by intercity transport, as this is a different city and a different region of Turkey.
