Kars Fortress is located on a rocky hill above the city of Kars, next to its historic district. Thanks to its elevated position, it long served as a key defensive point in eastern Anatolia and controlled the approaches to the city. For travelers, it is one of the most prominent historical sites in Kars, easily recognizable in the cityscape.
The existing fortifications are mainly associated with the Ottoman period. The fortress was restored at the end of the 16th century by order of Sultan Murad III after another phase of the Ottoman-Safavid conflict. Over the following centuries, it was repeatedly used for military purposes, and its appearance changed depending on the state of the defenses and the needs of the garrison.
Originally, the fortress complex included inner and outer lines of defense. To this day, the best-preserved parts are those of the citadel at the top of the hill, while the outer walls and fortifications have survived only in fragments. On the site, visitors can see the remains of defensive structures and traces of later buildings connected with the fortress's military use.
Today, the fortress is of interest not only as a historical monument but also as a viewpoint over old Kars. From here, it is convenient to observe the urban fabric, the Kars River, and nearby historical landmarks. A visit to the fortress is usually combined with a walk through the old quarters and sightseeing at other monuments in the center of Kars.

The climb to the fortress makes it possible to better understand the city's layout: from above, the stone quarters of old Kars, the 19th-century Russian buildings, and the river valley are clearly visible. At the very top, sections of walls and towers have been preserved, allowing visitors to imagine the structure of the citadel. The terrain here is uneven, so comfortable footwear is recommended for the visit.
Near the fortress is the mausoleum of Celal Baba, which is usually included in the same route. At the foot of the hill, visitors can see the city's historic districts and also walk to other well-known landmarks of Kars, including bridges, old mosques, and architecture from the Russian Empire period. This combination makes a walk through this part of the city especially rewarding.
The fortress is visited primarily for its panoramic views and as an introduction to the region's military history. It is not a museum space with an extensive exhibition, but an open historical site where the main attractions are the preserved landscape, the walls, and the overall sense of an old defensive position. At different times of the year, conditions on the hill may vary: in summer it is open and sunny, while in the colder season it can be windy and slippery.
The fortress is usually reached on foot or by taxi from the center of Kars, as it is located not far from the city's historic buildings. A visit is conveniently combined with a walk along the nearby streets, where several important monuments from different eras have been preserved.
