Kemere Stone Bridge

Kemere Stone Bridge in Amasra, Turkey

Kemere Stone Bridge is located in the center of Amasra, next to Amasra Castle, and connects the island part of the town with the mainland. It spans the narrow strait between the town’s two harbors - the Great Harbor and the Small Harbor, so it is easy to notice during a walk through the historic district.

The bridge is usually attributed to the Byzantine period, although over its long history it has been repaired and adapted to the town’s needs more than once. Its stone arch and location by the fortifications recall a time when this passage had not only a transport function, but also defensive importance.

Today, the bridge is perceived as part of Amasra’s historic character. It fits well into the old buildings, promenades, and port area, making it interesting for those who want to see not a separate monument, but a complete urban landscape with the sea, fortress walls, and boats in the harbor.

For tourists, it is a convenient point on a route through the town center. From here, you can view the strait, walk to the castle, reach the waterfront, and continue your stroll through the narrow streets of old Amasra without long distances.

A historic passage between Amasra’s two harbors

From the bridge, the narrow water passage is clearly visible, dividing and at the same time linking parts of the town. From here, you can observe boats and small vessels in the harbor, the stone walls of the fortress, as well as the shoreline of the historic center. What is especially striking is the combination of water, stone masonry, and the old urban setting.

During a walk across the bridge, it is worth paying attention to its simple, functional design. This is not a large standalone monument, but part of the everyday urban space, so it is best explored together with the fortress walls and the neighboring streets. The bridge is especially interesting for those who enjoy short walking routes with historic details and views of the port.

Nearby are Amasra Castle, waterfront promenades, seaside viewpoints, and old quarters with stairways and passageways between the houses. People usually come here to walk from one part of the historic center to another, take photos of the strait, and pause for a moment by the water.

The bridge can usually be reached on foot from any part of central Amasra in a few minutes. If you are already at the castle or on the waterfront, the bridge will be along the way between them.
