Kilitbahir Fortress
Kilitbahir Fortress on the European Shore of the Dardanelles, Canakkale, Turkey
Kilitbahir Fortress stands on the European shore of the Dardanelles, in the village of the same name near Eceabat, opposite the center of the city of Canakkale. Its location immediately explains the importance of this place: here the strait narrows, and together with Cimenlik Fortress on the Asian shore it forms a pair of fortifications that controlled the passage between the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean Sea.
The fortress was built in the 15th century by order of Sultan Mehmed II shortly after the conquest of Constantinople. The Ottoman authorities sought to strengthen control over the Dardanelles, through which military and merchant ships passed. The name Kilitbahir is usually understood as "the castle that locks the sea," which well conveys its defensive function.
The main feature of the fortress is its unusual inner tower with a trefoil plan, rare in Ottoman fortification. Around it are walls, courtyards, and fortified sections that were adapted in the following centuries to the development of artillery. Particularly noticeable changes date to later stages, when coastal defense was reinforced with batteries and new protective elements.
Today, Kilitbahir is of interest not only as a monument of Ottoman architecture, but also as part of the history of the Dardanelles and Gallipoli. People come here to see the old fortifications, better understand the defensive system of the strait, and combine a visit to the fortress with a trip to the historic sites of Canakkale.

Its location and architecture show the defensive role of the strait.
The Trefoil Tower at the Narrowest Point of the Dardanelles
During a visit to the fortress, attention is usually drawn to its central tower, a massive structure with a plan form rare for the region. Inside and in the courtyards, you can see thick walls, passageways, staircases, and defensive zones that show how military requirements changed from the era of the early Ottoman state to the period of artillery fortifications.
From the upper sections and open areas, views open over the strait, ferry traffic, and the city of Canakkale on the opposite shore. Thanks to this location, the fortress is especially illustrative for those who want to understand why control of the Dardanelles was so important. A visit is usually combined with exploring the exhibition areas, if they are open, and a walk through the village of Kilitbahir.
Other places connected with the history of the strait and the Gallipoli campaign are nearby, and Cimenlik Fortress is clearly visible on the Asian shore. The most convenient way to get here is via Eceabat, while from Canakkale visitors usually take a ferry to the European shore and then continue along the local road.
