Kilyos Beach

Kilyos Beach in Istanbul on the Black Sea

Kilyos Beach is located on the Black Sea coast in the northern part of Istanbul, in the Sariyer district. It is one of the most well-known beach areas among city residents, who come here for the sea, the sandy shore, and a more open coastline than on the Marmara Sea side. In the warm season, Kilyos becomes a popular destination for short trips from central Istanbul.

The name Kilyos usually refers not to one single beach, but to a stretch of coastline with several beach areas, clubs, and public sections. Here you will find long sandy strips, equipped sea entrances, seasonal cafés, and places to relax. The infrastructure is mainly designed for the summer period, so visiting conditions can vary noticeably at different times of the year.

The Black Sea here is often rougher than tourists relaxing on Istanbul’s southern coast might expect. Because of the wind and currents, water conditions change, so before swimming it is worth paying attention to flags, lifeguard warnings, and the current weather. Kilyos is suitable not only for beach holidays, but also for walks along the shore, especially on days when swimming is limited.

For travelers, Kilyos is interesting as a chance to see a different side of Istanbul - not urban and historical, but coastal. People come here for more open space, sea air, and a contrast with the dense development of the central districts. It is especially crowded here on weekends and on hot summer days.

Sandy Black Sea coast with waves and seasonal infrastructure

On the shore in Kilyos, you can spend a day by the sea, walk along the long sandy stretch, or choose an equipped area with sun loungers, showers, and cafés, if they are operating in season. In some zones there are beach clubs with paid entry, but there are also simpler sections of the coast. The style of relaxation depends on the specific beach: in some places an active daytime atmosphere prevails, while in others the shore feels calmer and more spacious.

The sea here often has noticeable waves, so Kilyos attracts not only sunbathers, but also those interested in water sports when conditions are suitable. Even if the water is too rough for swimming, the shore remains convenient for a walk and a short break by the sea. When planning a trip, it is useful to take into account the wind, sea conditions, and seasonal crowd levels.

In the surroundings of Kilyos there are other sections of the Sariyer Black Sea coast, as well as Belgrad Forest, where people often go for walks and picnics on the same day. From central Istanbul, people usually get here by car or taxi through the northern districts of the city; on weekends the trip may take longer because of traffic.
