Kirazli Monastery
Kirazli Monastery in Erdek, Turkey
Kirazli Monastery is located on the Kapidag Peninsula near Erdek, in a peaceful wooded part of the coast. Today it is an open-air archaeological site where the ruins of a Byzantine monastic complex have been preserved. The site is not equipped as a museum, so it is usually visited by those interested in the region’s history and lesser-known monuments.
On the grounds, you can see remains of stone masonry, foundations, and wall fragments that reveal the layout of the former buildings. Part of the ruins is hidden by shrubs and trees, so the details do not appear immediately and require careful observation. This is exactly what makes the visit more of an exploratory walk than a regular sightseeing stop.
The monastery is located away from the busy resort areas of Erdek, and this is one of its distinctive features. There are no ticket offices, fences, exhibition halls, or developed infrastructure here, but it preserves the feeling of a secluded historical site in a natural setting. For tourists, this is an opportunity to see traces of the peninsula’s Byzantine past outside the standard routes.
A trip here is usually combined with a drive through the villages of the Kapidag Peninsula, including in the direction of Kirazli and Ilhankoy. The last part of the route may pass along narrow local roads and dirt sections, sometimes with a short walk on foot. Before visiting, it is worth checking the route in navigation in advance and choosing comfortable closed shoes.

Exploring here is built not around individual exhibits, but around the setting itself: among the trees and uneven terrain, you can notice stone foundations of buildings, sections of old walls, and scattered architectural fragments. Visitors usually walk slowly around the area, examining the masonry and traces of former rooms. Because of the vegetation and the absence of developed paths, it is important to watch your step and not expect a quick overview.
It is better to come during daylight hours, when it is easier to distinguish the outlines of the ruins and orient yourself on the site. Closed shoes, water, and offline navigation are useful, since there is no noticeable tourist infrastructure on site. This location is more suitable for a quiet independent walk than for a long отдых or a family picnic with amenities.
In the surrounding area, you can continue your trip around the Kapidag Peninsula, stopping at small coastal villages, viewpoints, and sections of the shoreline in the Erdek area. Such a route is convenient to combine with a scenic drive through the less visited part of the peninsula.
People usually get here from the center of Erdek by car in the direction of the villages of Kirazli and Ilhankoy, and the last meters are sometimes covered on foot along a local road or trail.
