Kite Fortress
Kite Fortress in Bursa, Turkey
Kite Fortress is located on an elevation above the Urunlu neighborhood in the Nilufer district, west of central Bursa. Today, it is an open-air archaeological and historical site where the ruins of a medieval fortification and isolated sections of stone masonry have been preserved.
The fortress is usually associated with the Byzantine period, and in the early Ottoman era it found itself in the zone of conflict over the surroundings of Bursa. This is not a large castle with restored towers, but rather the remains of a local defensive post that helps illustrate how the hills and approaches to the city were controlled in the Middle Ages.
Visitors come here primarily for the historical context and the open views of the western part of Bursa and the foothills. On site, you can see wall fragments, building foundations, and the relief of the elevation itself, which explains why this point was chosen for fortification.
Kite Fortress will suit those interested in the early history of the region and those who prefer quiet, lesser-known places. At the same time, it is worth bearing in mind that infrastructure here is limited and the ruins have survived only partially, so a visit usually takes little time and combines well with a trip around the Nilufer area.

Kite Fortress - exploring the ruins and hilltop views
A place for a short walk and to see the remains of the fortification and the landscape.
Ruins of a medieval fortification with views over the surrounding hills
On the site, you can explore preserved wall fragments, sections of stone foundations, and the uneven outline of the former fortification on the hilltop. The place is best understood as a historical viewpoint: what matters here is not so much large architectural elements as the fortress’s location itself and the remains of the defensive line.
It is best to choose comfortable footwear for a walk, as the surface may be uneven and the area around the ruins remains quite exposed. There is usually no developed tourist infrastructure on site, so it is better to bring water and everything you need in advance.
The site offers views of the residential areas of western Bursa, rural plots, and the foothills, making it easier to understand the strategic importance of the hill. Nearby, you can combine the trip with visits to other places in the Nilufer district and a walk through the more modern neighborhoods of the western part of the city.
People usually get here from central Bursa by car or taxi toward the Nilufer district and the Urunlu neighborhood. Before the trip, it is useful to check the route and the current condition of the access road, as signage and tourist support may be minimal.
